CHAP 5: The Architect of Agony

The elevator opened to the top floor of the Hale Construction skyscraper. The glass walls offered a panoramic view of the burning city skyline, illuminated by sheet lightning from an approaching storm.
In the center of the massive penthouse office sat Victor Hale, enjoying a glass of the same expensive red wine his wife had poured at the dinner table. Daniel stood beside him, holding a remote detonator.
"You're late, Evelyn," Victor said, not even turning around. "But I suppose age slows everyone down."
"Where is Margaret?" I asked, keeping my rifle lowered but ready.
"My wife is currently boarding a private jet to Switzerland with our primary assets," Victor said, finally turning his leather chair to face me. "As for me, I wanted the pleasure of breaking the woman who thought she could humiliate me in my own home. You brought cops into my house, Evelyn. You put zip-ties on my wrists."
"You put your hands on an eight-year-old child," I replied, my voice dangerously calm. "That carries a much higher penalty."
Daniel stepped forward, his face twisted in a smug grin. "You think you're so smart, don't you? You think you hid Claire and Noah in a secondary bunker? I installed the smart-home routing for all your properties three years ago, 'Mom.' I knew about the subterranean levels before we even got married. The mercenaries aren't here, Evelyn. They're at the bunker right now. With my mother."
My heart skipped a beat, but my face remained an unreadable mask of stone.
"You see," Victor said, standing up, his massive frame towering over the desk. "Margaret didn't go to the airport. She went to collect her property. She always did love turning arrogant women into servants. Your daughter will spend the rest of her life in an underground facility in Eastern Europe. And your grandson will learn what real discipline is."
Daniel raised the remote detonator. "One press of this button, and the ventilation system in your bunker floods with neurotoxin. They won't even have time to scream. Drop the gun, Evelyn. Kneel, and beg my father for their lives."
The storm outside finally broke. A massive bolt of lightning illuminated the room, casting long, monstrous shadows across the floor.
I looked at Daniel, then at Victor. And then, I did something they didn't expect.
I laughed.
It wasn't a hysterical laugh. It was a cold, cruel sound that resonated through the empty penthouse.
"What's so funny?" Daniel snapped, his finger tightening on the trigger of the detonator.

"You think you married into my family by accident, Daniel?" I asked, taking a slow step forward. "You think you discovered my bunkers because you're a genius tech technician?"
HOOK FOR CHAP 6: I pulled a small black device from my pocket and pressed the button. The video screen on Victor’s wall flickered to life, showing the interior of the private jet—where Margaret was currently cuffed to a seat, surrounded by federal agents.
