Chapter 5 - THE ULTIMATUM"Step away?" I repeated, a dark, dangerous chuckle escaping my lips. I lowered my stance, my fingers tightening back around the grips of my 9mm pistols. "Julian, you spent six years hiding underground, playing ghost, while I kept this city bleeding. You think a few mercenaries in Halloween masks make you untouchable?"

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Look around you, Victor. You're outnumbered ten to one. Your weapons are spent. The girl goes with me, and you get a clean bullet to the heart—quick, painless, like old times."
"No!"
The sharp, desperate cry cut through the tension like glass.
The little girl stepped out from behind my back, planting herself directly between two heavily armed tactical operatives and my line of sight. She held the silver locket up in her trembling hand, its scratched surface catching the amber glow of the fire.
"You said you wouldn't hurt each other," the girl shouted, tears finally breaking free, streaming down her cold, soot-stained cheeks. "Daddy... you promised momma you wouldn't let anyone else die!"
Julian flinched. For a split second, the cold, calculated mastermind dissolved, leaving behind a broken father who had lost everything to a war he started.
"Lily, get back," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking slightly as he took a half-step forward, his hands dropping defensively. "You don't understand. Victor isn't who you think he is. He's a monster."
"He’s not a monster!" the girl yelled back, her voice echoing off the brick walls of the alley. "He protected me when the dogs were barking! He didn't shoot us! You're the one holding the guns!"
Bear let out another fierce bark, limping forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the little girl, his teeth bared directly at Julian. Even in starvation and pain, the animal possessed more loyalty than every single mercenary standing in this alley combined.
I looked down at the child, then up at Julian. A grim, resolute calm washed over me. I wasn't going to let them take her. Not to a life of perpetual running, not to a war built on lies.
"You want her, Julian?" I said, slowly sliding my pistols back into their shoulder holsters, raising my empty hands palms-up. "You’ll have to go through me first. Just like old times."
Julian stared at me, his chest heaving as a fierce internal battle raged behind his eyes. He slowly reached down to his tactical belt, his fingers curling around the grip of his sidearm.
"Don't do it, Julian," a voice hissed from the ground.
We both looked down. Vance, still slumped against the SUV door, spitting blood, let out a wet, mocking cough. He reached into his coat pocket with a trembling, blood-soaked hand, his fingers wrapping around something metallic and heavy.
"If you two stop fighting now," Vance wheezed, a manic grin spreading across his ruined face, "the whole house of cards falls down. And I’m not going down alone."

Before either Julian or I could react, Vance whipped his arm out, holding a remote detonator with a blinking red light.
"Say goodbye to the family, boys," Vance whispered, his thumb pressing down hard on the trigger.
