Chapter 10 - The True FortuneTwo weeks later, the front page of the Chicago Tribune bore a massive headline:

PHARMACEUTICAL GIANT COLLAPSES AS CORRUPTION SCANDAL UNFOLDS: LOCAL DEVELOPER REDIRECTS MILLIONS TO NEW MEDICAL ETHICS FOUNDATION.

Nathan Cole sat at his desk, reading the article over his morning coffee. The fallout from the scandal had reshaped the commercial real estate landscape in the Midwest, and Cole Urban Holdings had taken a temporary financial hit.

And yet, for the first time in his career, Nathan didn't care about the bottom line.

His phone buzzed on the mahogany desk.

He picked it up. It was a photo message from an unknown number with a Vermont area code.

The image showed little Caleb sitting propped up on a bright green lawn, wearing a tiny winter hat, smiling directly at the camera with wide, joyful eyes. Below the photo was a short text message:

First smile of the spring. Thank you for giving us our future back, Nathan.

Nathan stared at the screen for a long moment. The cold, ruthless developer, the spreadsheet wearing a human face—that man had stayed behind in the snow outside the closed pharmacy on a freezing December night.

In his place stood a man who finally understood the true value of a fortune.

Nathan locked his phone, set it gently on the desk, and smiled as he looked out at the bright, unobstructed Chicago sunrise.
