Chapter 9 - A Knock on the DoorIt was late evening when Nathan finally returned to his penthouse apartment overlooking Lake Michigan. The city lights twinkled across the frozen water like a million scattered diamonds.

He poured himself a glass of bourbon, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, and stared out at the dark horizon where the lake met the sky.

Ding-dong.

The gentle chime of his private elevator foyer broke the quiet of the penthouse.

Nathan frowned, checking his watch. It was past nine o'clock. He wasn't expecting any visitors.

He walked out to the private foyer and pulled open the heavy mahogany door.

Standing in the hallway was Emily Carter. She wore a clean, warm woolen coat, and in her arms, little Caleb was wide awake, staring up with bright, curious eyes.

"Emily?" Nathan asked, surprise evident in his voice. "Is everything all right? Did something happen with the protection detail?"

"No, everything is fine," Emily said softly, shifting the baby in her arms. "The federal agents are still downstairs. But... I didn't want to leave Chicago without doing one thing."

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, neatly wrapped package tied with a faded blue ribbon.

"What is this?" Nathan asked, stepping aside to let them in.

"It's not money, Mr. Cole," Emily said as she walked into the warm penthouse, looking around at the stunning view. "And it's not a legal document. It's just something Julian kept in his desk drawer at the hospital—something the men in black suits missed because it was hidden behind an old family photograph."

Nathan took the small package and carefully untied the ribbon.

Inside was an old, leather-bound journal with cracked edges and yellowed pages. On the inside cover, written in neat, elegant cursive, were the words: For the future of medicine, and for my son.

"Julian’s personal research journal," Emily explained quietly. "The one containing his true, uncorrupted work—the formulas Horizon tried to steal and destroy. I wanted you to have it. Because if you hadn't stopped in the snow that night... none of this truth would ever have seen the light."

Nathan traced his fingers over the cover of the journal, feeling a profound wave of respect for the man he had never met.

"Thank you, Emily," Nathan said, his voice thick with emotion. "What are your plans now?"

"We're going home to my parents in Vermont," she said, a peaceful smile finally resting on her face. "A fresh start. For both of us."
