Chapter 1 - THE IRON GATE AND THE WOLFThe heavy bass of fists striking the reinforced iron gates vibrated straight through the floorboards of the foyer, shaking the ancestral dust from the rafters. Outside, the blizzard howled like a wounded predator, but the sound of that pounding was colder, sharper, and far more lethal.

Marcus Kane had arrived.

"Doctor Nathan Vance," a voice boomed through the exterior intercom, amplified and devoid of any human warmth. It cut through the howling wind with terrifying clarity. "Open the gate. You have no idea what you are holding. Those children do not belong to you."

I stood frozen in the center of the warm foyer, the heavy trauma shears still clutched in my right hand. The slick plastic envelope containing Marcus's dark financial blueprints felt heavy in my pocket, burning against my thigh like a live coal. On the plush rug by the crackling fireplace, Rosa was frantically wrapping the two shivering infants in layers of heated wool, murmuring soft prayers under her breath. In my arms, seven-year-old Lily lay pale and still, her green eyes closed, her breathing dangerously shallow. Hypothermia and exhaustion were a lethal combination, and as a surgeon, I knew her vital signs were crashing.

"Nathan! What do we do?" Rosa hissed, her eyes wide with terror as she glanced toward the armored glass of the front window. "The intercom camera—look at the monitor!"

I stepped quickly to the console by the security panel. The external camera feeds flickered under the assault of the storm. Parked just outside our perimeter wall was a matte-black armored SUV, its engine rumbling with predatory power. Two heavy-set men in tactical gear stood flanking the driver's side, their faces obscured by ski masks and high-tech visors, holding automatic weapons that glinted wickedly under the amber security lights.

And stepping out from the passenger side, pulling down the collar of a sleek cashmere overcoat, was Marcus Kane.

Even through the fish-eye lens, his smile was unmistakable—a razor-thin slash of absolute cruelty. He didn't look like a grieving father whose wife had just vanished into the freezing wasteland. He looked like an apex predator that had finally tracked its wounded prey into a dead-end cave.

"He bypassed the primary sensor grid," I muttered, my jaw clenching so hard my teeth ached. "He didn't just drive up here; he anticipated our security protocols."

"Doctor Vance," Marcus’s voice echoed through the intercom again, smooth, dripping with mocking politeness. "Save us both the trouble. You’ve always thought you were the smartest man in any room. A brilliant surgeon playing God with broken hearts. But you're out of your depth. Hand over my children and the coat, and I might let you keep your fancy house standing."

"He knows about the documents," I realized with a jolt of pure adrenaline. "He knows Sarah hid them in the lining of Lily's coat. That’s why he’s hunting them across a blizzard instead of waiting for spring. If those papers reach the authorities, his entire corporate empire, his offshore accounts, and his freedom vanish forever."

"Nathan!" Rosa cried out as Lily let out a faint, painful whimper on the rug, her tiny fingers twitching.

I looked down at my niece. Her pale face bore an uncanny resemblance to Sarah’s—the same fierce, unyielding spirit that had driven my sister away from this very house seven years ago. I had been arrogant back then. I had given her an ultimatum: Choose him or choose me. She chose him, and I slammed the heavy oak door in her face, swearing I would never look back.

Now, her dying breath had been a plea for me to protect her children from the monster she had married.

I failed Sarah once, a dark, cold fury rose from the depths of my chest, sweeping away every trace of hesitation. I will not fail her babies now.

"Rosa," I commanded, my voice dropping into the steady, uncompromising tone I used inside the operating theater when a patient's heart stopped on the table. "Move Lily and the babies into the panic room behind the library immediately. Use the secondary keypad code: Sarah's birthday. Not mine."

"And you, Doctor?" Rosa asked, her voice shaking violently. "You can't face them alone!"

"I'm not going to face them," I said, a grim, dangerous smile touching my lips as I walked toward the oak gun cabinet mounted on the mahogany wall. "I'm going to operate."

I turned the brass key and pulled open the glass doors. Inside sat my grandfather’s antique hunting rifle, alongside a heavy-duty tactical shotgun I had purchased during the riots years ago. But weapons were only tools. The true weapon was the sprawling, maze-like smart-home architecture of this estate—a fortress I had engineered brick by brick, wire by wire, specifically to keep out the very evil that was now rattling my gates.

Outside, the intercom crackled one last time before Marcus lost his patience.

"Five seconds, Nathan! Then my men blow the hinges!"

I didn't answer. Instead, I pressed the master override button on my control tablet, plunging the entire exterior of the mansion into absolute darkness.

The game had begun.
