Chapter 10 - The War Room Reconceived

The heavy oak door clicked open as I stepped back inside, my face set in a grim, unyielding mask. Lily and Rose rushed toward me, wrapping their small arms tightly around my waist, burying their faces in my flannel shirt.

"Are we going to have to run again, Uncle Daniel?" Lily whispered, her voice trembling with the fragile echoes of trauma.

I knelt down, looking directly into their dark, frightened eyes, placing my hands firmly on their shoulders.

"No," I said, my voice steady, filled with an ironclad conviction that left no room for doubt. "We aren't running anywhere. This is our home. And nobody is going to take it away from us."

I led them into the kitchen, turned on the television to a safe children’s channel to keep them distracted, and then climbed the wooden stairs to the second floor.

The high-tech cedar room had been stripped by the federal marshals three months ago, but they hadn't taken the secure internal wiring infrastructure Mara had built into the structural beams. I pulled open a hidden floor panel beneath the main desk, revealing a secondary offline hard-wired terminal—a backup system Mara must have installed just in case the primary servers were ever compromised.

I sat down in the leather chair, plugged my encrypted satellite phone into the console, and dialed Elena Ruiz’s direct private line.

She answered on the first ring.

"Daniel? Status report. Your heart rate sounds elevated."

"They were here, Elena," I said without preamble, my fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard to activate the cabin's perimeter security feeds. "A representative from Kaelen & Voss. Tailored suit, Swiss accent, silver serpent coin."

A heavy silence hung on the other end of the line for a long, agonizing moment.

"Kaelen & Voss?" Elena’s voice dropped to a tense, dangerous whisper. "Daniel, those aren't corporate executives. That's an international private intelligence and security syndicate. They operate above the law, above sovereign borders, and above federal oversight. If they’re on your property, federal protection won't hold. They have assets inside the Department of Justice."

"I figured as much," I replied calmly, my eyes scanning the live video feeds from the perimeter cameras I had secretly installed along the mountain road. "Which is why I'm not waiting for an internal leak to compromise us. I'm taking the fight to them."

"What are you planning, Daniel? You're a civilian now!"

"I'm a former federal prosecutor who still knows how to unearth a digital ghost," I said, a cold, hard edge returning to my tone. "Mara didn't just hide a cryptographic ledger. She left a roadmap of their entire global network embedded in the offline drives. They think they're hunting us. They don't realize I'm about to pull the pin on their entire financial empire."

"Give me forty-eight hours," Elena urged, her voice laced with desperation. "I’ll pull a rogue black-ops team together. We can extract you and the girls to a safehouse in—"

May you like

"There is no safehouse, Elena," I interrupted softly. "Not until this is finished. Send me every classified asset file you have on Kaelen & Voss through the secure channel. I'm going to finish what Mara started."

I hung up the phone before she could argue further. The screen of the terminal flickered to life, illuminating the dark room with a wash of aggressive green code. The hunt was officially on.
