Chapter 15 - The Eye of the Storm

By noon, the cabin was swarming with federal investigators, forensic accountants, and digital forensics teams packing up the remaining server hardware into secure transport cases.
Lily and Rose were sitting safely in the back of the heated transport van, wrapped in blankets and drinking hot cocoa provided by a female marshal, completely oblivious to the close brush with death just outside their window.
Elena walked up the wooden steps of the porch, wiping soot and mud from her tactical jacket, and handed me a secure satellite tablet.
"You crazy bastard," Elena said, a mix of awe and frustration in her eyes. "You almost got yourself killed taking on a Kaelen & Voss extraction team with a hunting rifle."
"They were trying to breach the girls' room," I replied flatly, handing her the silver serpent coin I had pocketed earlier. "Did the upload go through before I severed the uplink?"
Elena looked down at the coin, her expression turning dead serious.
"It went through," she whispered. "Every single liquidity pool, offshore holding, and shell corporation belonging to Kaelen & Voss has been frozen by an international banking coalition led by the Interpol financial crimes unit. Their board members are being rounded up in Zurich, London, and Geneva as we speak."
She looked up, meeting my eyes with a deep, unwavering respect.
"You didn't just survive, Daniel. You decapitated them."

I looked back toward the tree line, watching the distant mountain peaks rise proudly against the clear spring sky. The storm had finally passed, leaving behind a profound and lasting peace. Mara’s final mission was complete.
"Not yet," I murmured softly, sliding the platinum ring on my finger. "Now, we finally go home."
