Chapter 5 - The Cavalry in the Blizzard

Crash!

The reinforced glass skylight of the cedar room shattered inward as a heavy tactical rappelling line dropped through the opening. Before Vanessa could swing her revolver upward, a booted foot caught her squarely in the chest, sending her sprawling backward onto the concrete floor. The heavy black revolver flew from her grip, skidding across the polished surface and coming to a rest near the server racks.

"Federal agents! Don't move!" a crisp, authoritative voice boomed through the room.

Elena Ruiz dropped through the skylight, clad in heavy tactical gear, her sidearm drawn and trained squarely on Vanessa’s chest. Two more armed federal marshals quickly followed, rappelling down with military precision and securing the perimeter within seconds.

Vanessa scrambled backward, clawing at the concrete, her face draining of all color as she stared up at the badge dangling from Elena’s tactical vest.

"Elena..." Vanessa choked out, her voice trembling. "This is a private family matter—"

"A family matter involving grand-scale international wire fraud, money laundering, and child endangerment," Elena cut her off coldly, stepping forward and clicking a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto Vanessa's wrists with practiced efficiency. "You have the right to remain silent, Vanessa Mercer. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of federal law."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, the heavy brass scales of justice slipping from my hand and clattering softly against the floor. The adrenaline rush began to recede, leaving a profound, aching exhaustion in its wake.

Elena walked over to me, looking me up and down with deep, searching eyes.

"You look like hell, Daniel," she said gently, clapping a firm hand onto my shoulder.

"Good to see you too, Elena," I replied, managing a tired, genuine smile. "I take it my call didn't go to voicemail?"

"Your call woke up the entire field office," Elena said, nodding toward the shattered skylight where the howling wind and swirling snow were now pouring into the room. "We've been tracking Vanguard's offshore accounts for six months. We just needed the master decryption key to lock down the indictments. You delivered the final piece of the puzzle."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the small brass key, handing it to her.

"Mara kept it safe," I murmured, my eyes drifting back to the computer monitor where her digital ghost had delivered her final warning. "She knew her sister better than any of us."

"Where are the girls?" Elena asked, her expression softening instantly.

"Downstairs. Warm, safe, and asleep."

"Good." Elena motioned to the marshals, who were hoisting a struggling, screaming Vanessa to her feet and dragging her toward the door. "Let's get everyone off this mountain. Your shift is officially over, counselor."
