Chapter 2 - The Secret Inheritance

The whispers in the ballroom erupted into a deafening roar. Journalists and society bloggers, invited to chronicle the wedding of the year, were frantically typing on their phones, uploading live updates that would send shockwaves through Wall Street and Hollywood before midnight.

"Forty-two percent?" Vanessa spun toward Ryan, her bridal veil slipping from her perfectly styled hair. Her voice lost all its sweet, angelic cadence, replaced by sharp, venomous hysteria. "Ryan! What is she talking about? What do you mean they own forty-two percent of your company? Did you mortgage our assets?"

"I didn't—I don't know!" Ryan stammered, sweating profusely under the blazing lights. He lunged forward past the altar, ignoring the gasps of the guests, and stopped a few feet away from Mariana. His eyes were wide, filled with a frantic, desperate pleading. "Mariana, please. Let's not do this here. Let's talk in private. My God, those are... those are my kids?"

"Your kids," Mariana repeated, her tone dripping with quiet sarcasm. "Strange. Three years ago, you told me a marriage without children was a waste of time. You told me my body was defective. You threw my suitcase into the dirt because you wanted a woman who could 'give you a family.' Tell me, Ryan... did Vanessa give you a family yet?"

Vanessa flushed a violent shade of crimson. The truth hung painfully in the air: after three years of marriage, Vanessa had produced no heirs, spending her days shopping, sunbathing, and demanding entry into elite charity boards while Ryan funded her lavish lifestyle through mounting, hidden debts.

"You trapped me!" Vanessa screamed, turning on Ryan with claws out. "You never told me you had kids! You told me she was barren!"

"She was barren, according to you and your mother!" Ryan shouted back, completely losing his composure in front of three hundred elite witnesses.

"According to your mother’s paid medical reports, perhaps," a deep, authoritative voice interrupted.

Alexander Whitmore stepped forward, pulling a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase. He flipped it open, revealing certified medical documents, hospital seals, and legal affidavits.

"Let's clear up a few historical inaccuracies for the press gathered here tonight," Alexander announced, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent hall. "Eleven years ago, Mariana’s mother passed away under mysterious circumstances while her family estate was being liquidated. A certain legal firm—managed by associates of Rebecca Montgomery—ensured that Mariana’s inheritance vanished into a shell corporation."

Rebecca gasped, clutching her chest. "That's a lie! A malicious fabrication!"

"Is it, Rebecca?" Alexander turned his cold, piercing gaze toward the older woman. "We have the bank statements. We have the wire transfers. And more importantly, we have the medical records proving that three years ago, when Ryan threw Mariana out for alleged infertility, she had just undergone successful surgery for severe endometriosis—a condition your family physician deliberately misdiagnosed for a decade to keep her weak, compliant, and childless."

The ballroom went dead. The accusation was monumental. Medical malpractice, financial fraud, and emotional abuse, laid bare before the most powerful people in California.

Little Leo tugged on Mariana’s green silk skirt, looking up with big, innocent eyes. "Mommy, is this the bad man's party? Can we get cake now?"

Mariana knelt down, her face softening instantly into an expression of radiant, fierce maternal love. She kissed the top of Leo’s head. "Almost, sweetheart. First, Mommy has to show these nice people how the game is played."

Ryan fell to his knees on the polished marble. The pristine white petals scattered around him from Vanessa’s dropped bouquet looked like confetti at a funeral.

"Mariana," Ryan sobbed, his hands trembling as he reached out toward her hem. "Please. I was a fool. Mother manipulated me—she poisoned my mind! We can fix this. We can be a family again. Look at our children! We belong together!"

Mariana stood slowly, looking down at the man who had broken her heart, humiliated her, and stolen a decade of her life.

"A family, Ryan?" Mariana whispered, her voice cold as winter ice. "You don't want a family. You want an audience. And right now... your show is canceled."
