Chapter 8 - The Final Horizon

Far away from the sunshine and blooming roses of Bel-Art, inside the bleak, fluorescent-lit visitor’s room of a federal penitentiary, Ryan Montgomery sat across a scratched plastic table from his court-appointed public defender.
His hair was entirely gray now, his shoulders permanently hunched, his eyes dull and lifeless.
"The parole board denied the appeal," the attorney said matter-of-factly, sliding a manila folder across the table. "Given the high-profile nature of the Whitmore Foundation lawsuits and the federal restitution orders, your sentence stands."
Ryan didn't reply. He stared at his own reflection in the grease-stained window beside him.
Outside the high-security fence, a television screen mounted in the prison rec room flickered with a morning news broadcast.
Ryan looked up just in time to see a familiar face fill the screen.
It was Mariana.
She was standing on the grand steps of the newly opened Whitmore-Montgomery Women's Medical Center, cutting a ceremonial red ribbon alongside state governors, leading physicians, and her three bright, smiling children.
The news anchor’s voice drifted through the static speaker: "...and founding philanthropist Mariana Whitmore announced a fifty-million-dollar endowment today, ensuring that no woman in California will ever again fall victim to medical fraud or emotional coercion without access to justice..."
The camera zoomed in on Mariana’s face. She wasn't looking at the cameras with bitterness or triumph; she looked serene, powerful, and radiantly alive.
Beside her, little Lily held up a small drawing for the press photographers, while Leo and Lucas stood tall and proud, protected by a legacy that could never be stolen.
A prison guard tapped Ryan on the shoulder. "Visitation time is over, Montgomery. Back to your block."
Ryan stood up slowly, his joints stiff, the orange jumpsuit heavy on his frame. He took one last look at the television screen as it switched to a commercial, plunging the room back into drab, monotonous gray.
He had wanted a legacy. He had wanted a dynasty. He had wanted a family that bowed to his ego.

And in his relentless pursuit of perfection, he had thrown away the only person who would have loved him through the flaws.
As the heavy steel cell door slammed shut behind him, Ryan finally understood the finality of his choices. Mariana’s children would grow up knowing love, strength, and truth, while he remained trapped in the prison of his own making—watching the queen he had banished rule an empire of her own creation.
