Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike

The morning sun over Los Angeles did nothing to warm the freezing atmosphere inside the downtown headquarters of Montgomery Real Estate. Or rather, what was left of it.
By 9:00 AM, federal investigators had seized the corporate servers. By 10:00 AM, the board of directors had unanimously voted to strip Ryan of his CEO title, desperate to distance themselves from the unfolding scandal.
Ryan sat in his glass-walled corner office, staring at a box filled with his personal belongings: a silver pen, a framed photo of his mother, and a paperweight shaped like a globe—a globe he had once boasted he would conquer.
The door pushed open without a knock.
Rebecca strode in, looking twenty years older than she had forty-eight hours ago. Her hair was disheveled, her designer suit jacket buttoned crookedly.
"We need to transfer the remaining Swiss accounts immediately," Rebecca hissed, locking the office door behind her. "If we move the funds through the Cayman Islands subsidiary before the Whitmore forensic accountants realize—"
"It's over, Mother," Ryan interrupted, his voice completely flat. He didn't even look up from the cardboard box.
"Don't you dare talk to me about it being over!" Rebecca shrieked, slamming her hand onto the glass desk. "We built this family! We built this company! We can't let that ungrateful, barren brat and her billionaire uncle take everything we've worked for!"
"She wasn't barren!" Ryan finally snapped, standing up so violently his chair crashed backward onto the floor. His face was twisted with fury and self-loathing. "Stop lying, Mother! Stop pretending we didn't know! I saw the unredacted files Alexander sent this morning. You paid Dr. Vance to alter her medical charts twelve years ago! You gave her drugs that made pregnancy impossible just so I would stay dependent on our social circle!"
Rebecca froze, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. For a split second, her calculated mask slipped, revealing the ruthless, manipulative predator beneath.
"I did it for you," Rebecca whispered defensively, her voice trembling. "She wasn't of our class! She didn't have the pedigree to match a Montgomery!"
"And look where your pedigree got us," Ryan laughed bitterly, a hollow, manic sound. "We're bankrupt. We're facing federal fraud charges. And my children—my real flesh and blood—will grow up calling another man 'grandfather' while I rot in a prison cell or a cheap apartment."
Before Rebecca could reply, the office door swung wide open.
Two federal marshals stood in the doorway, flanked by a Whitmore Holdings corporate attorney.
"Ryan Montgomery and Rebecca Montgomery," the lead marshal said, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit identity theft."

Rebecca screamed as the cold metal locked around her wrists, her designer pearl necklace snapping and scattering white beads across the expensive Italian tile floor.
Ryan didn't resist. He simply held out his hands, letting the cuffs snap shut. As they dragged him past the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, he caught a reflection of himself in the glass—a broken man who had traded true love and a family for vanity and gold.
