Chapter 5 - The Maid's CounterattackThe heavy iron gates of the Moretti estate locked shut behind the federal convoy, leaving the mansion in an eerie, oppressive silence.

Inside the dimly lit kitchen, Elena stood over the marble island, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Through the sheer lace curtains, she watched the last taillight of the transport vanish down the winding driveway.

She was alone.

Victoria was locked away in the guest lodge, the guards were either bribed or replaced by Richard’s loyalists, and the entire house was effectively under hostile occupation. Richard thought he had purged the board and secured total victory. He had left behind a skeleton crew of two armed guards to watch the perimeter while he headed downtown to celebrate his hostile takeover at corporate headquarters.

Elena reached into her pocket and pulled out the small, obsidian-black flash drive I had slipped to her.

"You're trusting me with the keys to the kingdom, Adrian," she whispered to the empty room.

A sudden clatter from the hallway made her freeze.

"Hey! Check the pantry! Vance said no one is allowed to roam free!" a gruff voice echoed through the high ceilings. Heavy footsteps were approaching the kitchen.

Panic threatened to paralyze her for a split second, but training—something in her past that she had kept hidden behind her quiet, unassuming maid uniform—instantly took over.

Elena slipped out the side service door just as the guard kicked open the main kitchen entrance. Ducking into the labyrinthine network of the mansion's service tunnels—passages built over a century ago for the estate's staff to move unseen—she navigated the pitch-black corridors by memory alone.

She needed a terminal. Not the main office network, which Richard had locked down with biometric encryption, but the old analog relay room in the deep sub-basement.

Ten minutes later, sliding open a heavy iron grate, Elena dropped silently into the sub-basement. Dust danced in the beam of a single emergency flashlight mounted on the damp stone wall. There, tucked in the corner, was an independent, air-gapped terminal—a relic from Clara's father's era that wasn't connected to the cloud, meaning Richard’s remote corporate firewall couldn't touch it.

Her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed.

She plugged in my flash drive. A green command-line interface flashed on the monochrome CRT monitor.

DECRYPTING ROOT SECRETS... ACCESS GRANTED: ADRIAN MORETTI.

Instead of looking at the financial ledgers, Elena opened a hidden partition labeled Project Janus.

Her breath hitched as she read the files. It wasn't just twelve million dollars. Richard Vance and Victoria Moretti had been running a massive corporate raiding scheme for five years, systematically driving competing firms into bankruptcy, forging land deeds, and—most horrifyingly—covering up the suspicious circumstances surrounding Clara Moretti's fatal car accident six months ago.

It wasn't a standard car crash. The brakes had been manually sabotaged.

And the order had been signed by Victoria Moretti, with Richard Vance executing the wire transfer to the mechanic who performed the sabotage.

Tears welled up in Elena’s eyes, but she didn't weep. Her grief hardened into pure, unadulterated steel. They hadn't just framed her for theft; they were killers who had destroyed a family, and they were trying to do it again to Adrian and his daughters.

"Not on my watch," Elena murmured, her voice steady and lethal.

She didn't just copy the files. She routed an automated broadcast packet straight to every major news network, the State Attorney General's personal secure server, and—most importantly—the live media screens inside the Moretti Enterprises annual shareholder meeting, which was scheduled to begin in exactly four hours.

As the progress bar hit 100%, a soft chime echoed from the terminal.

TRANSMISSION COMPLETE. DEADBIRD PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

Suddenly, the red emergency lights in the sub-basement flared to life, accompanied by the heavy clanking of the security grate above being ripped open.

"There she is! Grab the maid!"

Footsteps rushed down the stone stairs. Elena spun around, grabbing a heavy iron wrench from the maintenance rack just as the first guard lunged into the room.
