Chapter 6 - Blood on the Boardroom FloorThe sun rose over downtown Chicago, casting a cold, metallic glare across the glass facade of Moretti Enterprises tower. Inside the grand executive boardroom on the 50th floor, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Seated at the head of the polished mahogany table was Richard Vance. He wore an expression of supreme, untouchable triumph, casually sipping black coffee as he looked out at the assembly of terrified board members and murmuring journalists.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard began, his voice smooth and authoritative, projecting across the silent room. "As you are all aware, due to regrettable... legal complications involving former CEO Adrian Moretti's reckless misconduct and alleged embezzlement, the board has voted to grant me interim executive control."
A murmur rippled through the room. Several older board members exchanged uneasy glances, knowing how fiercely loyal Adrian had always been to corporate integrity.
"This is unprecedented," muttered old Mr. Henderson, adjusting his glasses. "Where is Victoria? She hasn't answered her phone all morning."
"Mrs. Moretti is resting," Richard replied smoothly, a flicker of cold satisfaction crossing his eyes. "Given the family shock, she has stepped back from public life. Now, let us proceed to vote on the emergency restructuring package—"
CLANG.
The heavy, soundproof oak doors of the boardroom didn't just open—they blew inward, splintering against the reinforced frame.
Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.
Standing in the doorway was a sight that made the blood drain from Richard’s face.
It wasn't a federal agent. It wasn't a lawyer.
It was Elena.
Her hair was slightly disheveled, her coat bore a faint smudge of dust from the service tunnels, but her posture was straight, unyielding, and terrifyingly calm. Flanking her on either side were two state troopers and—stepping out from behind her—Adrian Moretti himself.
"Adrian?!" Richard choked out, dropping his coffee cup. The ceramic mug shattered against the floor, spilling dark liquid across the pristine white carpet like a spreading stain of blood. "How... how are you out? The federal judge signed the remand order!"
"Judges tend to change their minds when the State Attorney General personally intervenes, Richard," I said, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. I walked slowly down the center aisle, my steel-toed boots echoing against the floor. "Especially when presented with undeniable proof of federal bribery and judicial tampering."
"You're lying!" Richard shrieked, panic breaking through his polished veneer as he stood up, knocking his chair over. "Guards! Security! Arrest them!"
"Security isn't coming, Richard," a deep voice rumbled from the doorway. Marcus stepped into the room, holding a digital tablet up high. "The estate guards are currently in federal custody. And your personal private security detail just surrendered outside."
I stopped ten feet away from Richard, my eyes locked onto his sweating, panicked face.
"You thought you could frame me, steal twelve million from a children's charity, and bury your crimes under a mountain of forged paperwork," I said softly, stepping closer. "You even thought you could get away with murdering my wife."
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Journalists surged forward, cameras flashing blindingly, microphones thrust into the air.
"Murder?!" Mr. Henderson gasped, standing up from the board. "Adrian, what is he talking about?"
"Project Janus," Elena answered clearly, stepping forward and tapping a key on the main boardroom console.
The massive projector screen behind the desk flickered to life. The audio recording began to play—crystal clear, recorded from the sub-basement archive.
“Make sure the brake lines are cleanly severed,” Victoria Moretti’s voice rang out through the speakers, followed by Richard Vance’s cold reply: “Done, Victoria. Once Clara’s out of the way, the trust fund control passes entirely to our syndicate.”
Richard stood frozen, staring at the screen as his own voice condemned him to a lifetime behind bars. His knees buckled, and he collapsed back into his chair, gasping for air like a fish out of water.
"Take him away," I commanded.
The two state troopers stepped forward, grabbing Richard by the shoulders and wrenching him out of his seat. As they dragged him kicking and screaming past the wall of cameras, Richard glared back at Elena with venomous hatred.
"This isn't over!" Richard screamed, spittle flying from his lips. "Victoria will destroy you! The family will never let you win!"
May you like
As the heavy boardroom doors closed behind them, silence descended once more over the 50th floor.
I turned around, looking past the swarm of reporters toward the back of the room where Elena stood quietly by the doorway. The storm had finally broken, but as I looked into her eyes, I knew the battle for the Moretti soul was only just beginning.
