Chapter 4 - THE GENERAL'S OFFICEThe Pentagon at 0600 hours was a different universe. While the rest of the world was just waking up, the five-sided concrete labyrinth was already humming with the suppressed energy of global strategy, classified briefings, and relentless operational execution.

I walked down the E-Ring corridor, my polished boots clicking sharply against the reinforced linoleum. Despite my completely shaved head—which now gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights—every military policeman, junior officer, and passing colonel snapped a crisp, flawless salute.

I returned each one with mechanical precision. My mind was completely clear. The domestic nightmare of the past forty-eight hours had been surgically excised from my life like a malignant tumor.

I stopped outside a heavy oak door bearing a brass plaque: MAJOR GENERAL ARTHUR STERLING – COMMANDING GENERAL, STRATEGIC INTELLIGENCE COMMAND.

Before I could even raise my knuckles to knock, the door swung open. General Sterling stood there, his silver hair cropped military-short, his chest adorned with rows of ribbons that told the history of every major conflict of the last three decades.

"Colonel Vance," Sterling said, his eyes immediately dropping to my bald head. He didn't flinch, nor did he offer any empty platitudes of sympathy. A faint, knowing smirk played at the corner of his mouth. "Word travels fast in this building. I see you opted for the high-and-tight extreme."

"Standardizing my profile, General," I replied crisply, stepping past him into the spacious, map-lined office. "Less aerodynamic drag during flight."

Sterling let out a sharp, bark-like laugh, gesturing for me to take a seat at the heavy mahogany conference table. He walked over to the side credenza, poured two cups of black coffee, and slid one across the table toward me.

"Agent Vance briefed me on the situation an hour ago," Sterling said, leaning back in his leather chair and crossing his arms. "Your husband’s little scheme to have you declared psychologically unfit, combined with that fraudulent home equity loan and the unauthorized data exfiltration... it’s a mess, Valerie. A very ugly, very public mess."

"It’s contained, Sir," I said, taking a sip of the bitter, piping-hot coffee. "The federal marshals have frozen all of Ryan and Linda’s joint assets. Their bank accounts are empty, their credit cards are burned, and their defense attorney just quit after realizing his retainer was paid using funds stolen from my military retirement account."

"Good," Sterling murmured, tapping a thick stack of classified folders on his desk. "Because we have a bigger problem than your domestic situation."

I sat up straighter. "Sir?"

"That thumb drive Agent Vance pulled out of Linda’s suitcase," Sterling said, sliding a red-tabbed folder across the table. "We ran a deep-level forensic analysis on the encryption keys last night. It wasn't just random corporate espionage, Valerie. The files Ryan and Linda were trying to siphon off to that offshore shell company weren't just standard operational data—they were the complete deployment rosters and satellite telemetry coordinates for your new intelligence unit."

A cold spike of adrenaline pierced my chest. "Someone on the outside paid them."

"Someone with deep pockets and a very strong vested interest in seeing your strategic intelligence command compromised before you even set foot in the briefing room," Sterling said, his eyes narrowing. "Which means your husband wasn't just acting out of spite or greed. He was recruited."
