Chapter 7 - THE MIDNIGHT UPLOADThe clock on the secure tactical workstation in the Pentagon’s cyber-operations center ticked slowly toward midnight.

23:58:42.
23:58:43.
23:58:44.
I stood behind the lead cyber-warfare technician, my hands resting on the back of his ergonomic chair, watching lines of encrypted data cascade down the massive curved monitor like a digital waterfall.
Across the room, tethered via a secure, monitored acoustic line, Ryan sat in a quiet isolation booth with a headset strapped over his ears. His voice, shaky and dripping with rehearsed terror, was currently transmitting across an encrypted satellite frequency straight to Julian Sterling’s private server in Switzerland.
"Yes... yes, I swear to you," Ryan’s voice echoed softly through the monitoring speakers in the room. "She’s completely out of it. The psychiatric hold went through. The house is mine. I’m downloading the files right now... just like you asked."
On the main monitor, a progress bar suddenly appeared: TRANSMISSION INITIATED - ROUTING THROUGH PANA-SHIELD PROXY.
"We have handshake," the cyber-tech announced crisply, his fingers flying across his mechanical keyboard with blinding speed. "Tracing the bounce point... routing packet back-propagation... routing through the Swiss telecom backbone..."
"Don't let the connection close until we have their physical coordinates locked," I ordered, my eyes never leaving the screen.
"Locking on now, Colonel," the tech replied, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. "Got it! The server isn't in Geneva anymore. It’s bouncing off a private satellite uplink stationed out of a luxury penthouse in Monaco. Real-time physical IP address confirmed: Marina Boulevard, Suite 402."
I picked up the red secure phone on the console and punched a single extension.
"General Sterling. We have the origin point. Monaco."
"Excellent work, Valerie," the General’s voice crackled back instantly, sharp and decisive. "I’ve already coordinated with Interpol and European Cyber-Command. The tactical strike team is moving in on the Monaco penthouse as we speak. Let’s see how Mr. Julian Sterling likes being interrupted in the middle of a wire transfer."
I hung up the phone and watched the progress bar hit 100%.
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
Except it wasn't our actual operational intelligence that had just been transmitted to the shadow broker.
It was a classified military honey-pot file—a beautifully crafted digital virus designed by our top counter-intelligence coders that would instantly fry every hard drive, server, and backup device connected to Julian Sterling’s network the moment he opened the first folder.
As if on cue, the audio feed from Ryan’s isolation booth erupted with a sudden, sharp screech of feedback.
Through the monitor speakers, we heard a loud, violent CRASH—the sound of heavy oak doors being kicked off their hinges thousands of miles away in Monaco—followed by the muffled shouts of armed tactical agents shouting in French and English: "Police! Ne bougez plus! Mains en l'air!"
Ryan’s voice came over the line, whimpering in sheer panic from his isolation booth. "What’s happening? What was that noise?!"
May you like
I walked over to the glass partition of his booth, pressing the intercom button so my voice echoed coldly inside his little room.
"That, Ryan," I said smoothly, "was the sound of your co-conspirators losing everything. Just like you."
