Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW IN THE ARCHIVEThe ink on my new permanent contract was barely dry, but the ghosts of the Caldwell estate weren't ready to rest just yet.

It started with a loose floorboard in the mansion’s cavernous basement archive.
While organizing Margaret Hargrove’s remaining administrative files—most of which had been reduced to ash during the West Wing fire—I noticed a subtle discrepancy in the architectural blueprints. A secondary sub-level beneath the wine cellar, unlisted on any modern municipal map, was marked with a single, handwritten cipher: Project Janus.
“Ethan,” I called out, holding up a faded, yellowed ledger I had pulled from a rusted lockbox hidden beneath the floorboards.
Ethan materialized in the doorway of the archive within seconds, his tactical instincts never truly resting. He glanced down at the ledger, his jaw tightening instantly.
“Where did you find this?” he asked, his voice dropping into that familiar, lethal register.
“Underneath Margaret’s old desk anchor,” I replied, flipping open the brittle pages. “It’s not just a log of household expenses. It’s a funding trail. For the last ten years, money wasn't just being funneled into offshore accounts; it was paying for an off-site biological research lab operating right under the city limits.”
Ethan leaned over my shoulder, his dark eyes scanning the precise, clinical handwriting.
“Vance wasn't just a rogue competitor,” Ethan realized aloud, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity. “He was testing compounds. And Noah... Noah wasn't just being kept weak to control me. He was Patient Zero for a neuro-suppressant trial designed to break high-value syndicate bloodlines from the inside out.”
Before we could investigate further, the estate’s main security console shrieked with a high-pitched, automated alarm.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He drew his sidearm, handed me my backup piece, and headed for the stairs. “Lock the doors,” he ordered. “Someone’s come looking for what Margaret left behind.”
