Chapter 1 - The General Steps InThe heavy front door didn’t just open; it swung inward with a deliberate, rhythmic precision that silenced the dining room instantly. Heavy, polished boots clicked against the hardwood floor, echoing down the hall like a countdown.

Tyler’s phone slipped from his fingers, clattering against the edge of the glass table. Ray stopped laughing, his mouth hanging open as the shadow of a tall, imposing figure filled the entryway.

Stepping into the dining room wasn't just a lawyer. It was Brigadier General Marcus Vance, accompanied by two armed military police officers and a crisp, sharp-eyed JAG (Judge Advocate General) officer carrying a heavy black leather briefing binder.

My mother gasped, clutching her pearls as if she had just seen a ghost. Brian Whitaker, the slick lead attorney who had looked so untouchable two minutes ago, went entirely pale.

"At ease, everyone," General Vance’s voice cut through the heavy silence like a razor blade. He didn't look at my mother, Ray, or Tyler. His piercing eyes locked straight onto me. He offered a crisp, flawless military salute, which I returned without hesitation.

"Colonel Parker," Vance said, his tone dripping with formal authority. "Your presence was requested elsewhere, but you indicated you had an urgent domestic matter to resolve first. I brought the transport detail."

"Thank you, General," I said smoothly, uncrossing my arms and stepping away from the table. "I was just finishing up a briefing of my own."

Brian scrambled to his feet, his professional composure completely unraveling. "Excuse me! Who authorized this? This is a private residence, and this is a civil family estate dispute! You have no jurisdiction here!"

General Vance slowly turned his head, fixing the expensive attorney with a glare that had probably broken enemy combatants during interrogations.

"Jurisdiction?" Vance repeated coldly. "Counselor, you are currently attempting to extort a high-ranking active-duty United States military officer under federal protection. Furthermore, you are tampering with a military-classified asset. Jurisdiction was established the moment your firm transmitted threats over encrypted government-linked channels to Colonel Parker's secure mobile device."

My mother’s face drained of all color. "Claire... what is he talking about? What does the military have to do with your father’s will?"

I picked up the fountain pen Brian had slid toward me earlier, twirled it once between my fingers, and dropped it right back onto the thick stack of fraudulent paperwork.

"Everything, Mother," I whispered. "Because the trust didn't just protect my inheritance. It protected federal intelligence assets that Dad helped fund. And your little team of sharks just stepped onto a very radioactive minefield."
