Chapter 8 - Lights, Camera, EvictionThe double doors of the executive suite opened ten minutes later.

Grant burst into the room, flanked by a cameraman holding a heavy digital rig with a glowing red tally light and a young reporter holding a microphone.
“Look at this!” Grant shouted directly into the camera lens, gesturing wildly around the luxurious office. “This is a hostile takeover! My father, in his old age, has been manipulated by a gold-digging opportunist who trapped him with a staged pregnancy!”
Lily remained seated behind the massive mahogany desk. She didn't flinch, she didn't look away, and she didn't reach for her phone. She simply rested her hands calmly on the blotter, watching Grant make a complete fool of himself on live streaming video.
The young reporter, sensing a massive tabloid exclusive, shoved the microphone closer to Lily.
“Mrs. Carrington! Is it true that you forced the board to sign over voting control while Mr. Carrington was away? What do you have to say about allegations that your marriage was nothing more than a long-term corporate trap?”
Lily looked directly into the camera lens. Her gaze was so sharp, so completely devoid of fear or hesitation, that the cameraman instinctively steadied his shot.
“My marriage,” Lily said, her voice clear, calm, and carrying the absolute weight of authority, “was six years of building a company that my former husband nearly destroyed through negligence, incompetence, and embezzlement.”
Grant’s face flushed bright red. “You lying witch! You were a nobody when I married you! You were just a charity case!”
“And now,” Lily interrupted smoothly, standing up from her chair with quiet grace, her hand resting against her swollen belly, “I am the sole majority shareholder, CEO, and chairwoman of Carrington Global.”
She walked slowly around the desk until she was standing just three feet from Grant and the glowing camera light.
“You came here tonight looking for a public spectacle, Grant,” Lily continued, her voice dropping into a register so chillingly calm that the reporter actually took a half-step back. “You wanted to play the victim for the tabloids. But you forgot one very important rule of the empire you tried to sell off.”
“What... what are you talking about?” Grant stammered, suddenly losing his nerve as he looked into her eyes.
Lily turned slightly toward the cameraman.
“Marcus,” Lily called out clearly.
The office door swung wide open again. Two federal marshals, accompanied by corporate counsel Vance, stepped into the room. One of them held a thick stack of federal warrants and corporate freeze orders.

“Grant Carrington,” the lead marshal said, stepping forward with heavy footsteps. “You are being placed under arrest for securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit industrial espionage against Carrington Global.”
The flashbulbs—real ones this time, carried by police photographers and federal investigators—burst across the room like white lightning, freezing Grant’s mask of absolute horror in time forever.
