Chapter 1 - The Chamber Behind the CanvasThe heavy golden frame groaned under Emma’s push, pivoting on hidden iron hinges to reveal a passage cut directly into the foundation. Cold, damp air rushed out, carrying the faint scent of copper and mold. Beyond the opening, a narrow stone staircase spiraled down into pitch darkness. Her heart hammering against her ribs, Emma pulled off her yellow rubber gloves, pulled out her phone, and switched on the flashlight.

She descended carefully, the music from the ballroom above fading until it was replaced by the low hum of industrial ventilation. At the bottom of the stairs, the beam of her light hit a reinforced steel door embedded in the brickwork. It looked like a bank vault, complete with a digital keypad and an electronic lock.
Emma stepped closer, her breath catching. Beside the keypad lay a small, worn blue sneakers—Ethan’s favorite pair.
Before she could process the sight, a soft click echoed through the corridor. The heavy door swung open an inch. Emma held her breath, pushing it further. The room inside was not a dark dungeon, but a high-tech soundproof chamber. In the center stood a small cot, a monitoring screen displaying vital signs, and Ethan, curled into a ball, clutching his knees.
"Ethan?" Emma whispered, rushing to his side.
The boy looked up, his eyes hollow and red-rimmed. "Emma... don't let her see you," he sobbed weakly. "She isn't who she says she is."
"We’re getting you out of here right now," Emma said, lifting him. But as she turned back toward the door, a shadowy figure blocked the threshold.

Isabella Sterling stood in the doorway, her ivory satin dress glowing under the fluorescent lights of the hidden room. She held a sleek silver remote in one hand and a syringe in the other, her face devoid of the warm smile she showed the media.
"I must admit, Emma, I expected better boundary management from the staff," Isabella said, her voice chillingly smooth. "You just stumbled into a matter of national security—and personal inheritance."
