Chapter 1 - The Sealed FortressThe heavy iron gates of the Vale estate slammed shut with a finality that made the surrounding glass rattle. In the grand kitchen, the air was so thick with tension you could have cut it with a bread knife. Adrian Vale stood motionless beside the kitchen island, his tall frame rigid, his eyes fixed on the glass water bottle resting beside the stove.

"Dr. Bennett," Adrian's voice was a low, terrifying rumble that carried an undercurrent of barely suppressed violence. "What was in that bottle?"

The elderly pediatrician carefully sealed the remaining water into a sterile plastic evidence tube, his hands trembling slightly. "Initial signs point to a fast-acting neurotoxic compound, Mr. Vale. It mimics metabolic shock in infants. A trace amount transmitted through breast milk would be enough to cause immediate systemic rejection, seizures, and respiratory distress. If Hannah hadn't fed him when she did, or if he had absorbed even a milliliter more..." He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to.

Adrian slowly turned his gaze toward me. The warmth of the grieving father who had wept in my bakery three days ago was entirely gone. In his place stood the ruthless waterfront boss who controlled the smuggling docks, the unions, and the underworld of New York Harbor.

"You drank from that bottle at 7:15 AM," Adrian said, stepping closer. His voice was dangerously quiet. "Who handed it to you?"

"Nobody," I snapped back, my adrenaline overriding my fear. I held Lucas tightly against my chest; the baby had quieted down into an exhausted, shallow sleep, his tiny heartbeat fluttering against my ribs. "I poured it myself from the pitcher on the counter. The same pitcher every single person in this house uses."

"Then someone laced the pitcher," one of his chief enforcers, a scarred brute named Paulie, muttered from the doorway.

"Lock down the estate," Adrian commanded, his eyes sweeping across the six armed guards and the trembling kitchen staff huddled near the pantry. "Nobody leaves. No phones, no communications, no exceptions. If anyone tries to cross the perimeter line, shoot them in the legs and drag them to the basement."
