Chapter 2 - Whispers in the ShadowsBy noon, the estate had been transformed into an interrogation ground. The grand salon, usually a sterile museum dedicated to the memory of Isabel Vale, was converted into a makeshift command center. Security feeds from eighty-four high-definition cameras were projected onto a massive digital screen brought in by Adrian’s tech specialists.

I sat in a high-backed velvet chair in the corner, rocking Lucas. Dr. Bennett had administered a neutralizing antidote, and the baby's color had slowly returned to a healthy pink, though he remained weak. Margaret, the loyal housekeeper, brought me a fresh cup of tea with trembling hands.

"Drink it, child," Margaret whispered, glancing nervously toward Adrian, who was pacing behind a long mahogany table. "He suspects everyone right now. Even me."

"Why you?" I asked quietly.

"I raised Isabel," Margaret said, her eyes welling with tears. "And I raised Adrian when he was a boy. People think this house is filled with loyal soldiers, but power attracts vipers, Hannah. Isabel's death wasn't an accident. And now, someone is trying to finish her family line."

Before I could press her further, Adrian slammed his fist onto the table. The loud crack echoed through the vaulted ceilings, silencing the room instantly.

"Rewind camera four," Adrian ordered the technician. "Slow motion. Speed x0.25."

On the screen, the kitchen island came into sharp focus. The footage showed the early morning hours before I had come downstairs. At 5:40 AM, while the kitchen was completely empty, a shadowy figure slipped through the side pantry door—a door that required a biometric code known only to four people in the entire compound: Adrian, Dr. Bennett, Margaret, and head of security Victor Vance.

The figure approached the water station, unscrewed the cap of the glass pitcher, and used a small syringe to inject a clear droplet into the liquid before disappearing back into the service corridors.

The security tech enhanced the face. Even through the dim lighting and dark hoodie, the distinctive silver cufflink on the intruder's left wrist caught the harsh glare of the overhead light.

Adrian froze. His face drained of all color, turning a stark, ghostly white. He recognized the cufflink.
