Chapter 5 - The Confession in the DarkBefore I could process the chilling warning, the heavy steel door of the safe room clicked open. Adrian stepped inside, alone. His suit jacket was gone, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing intricate tattoos of the New York waterfront skyline and jagged anchor chains.
He took one look at my pale, terrified face and stopped. "What happened? Did someone try the intercom?"
"Who is Julian?" I asked directly, ignoring his question. "And why did that voice on the speaker say you killed Isabel?"
Adrian’s breath hitched. The air in the small room instantly turned glacial. He closed his eyes for a long moment, as if battling internal demons that had haunted him for years. When he opened them, they were bloodshot and filled with a profound, agonizing sorrow.
"Sit down, Hannah," he said softly, his voice devoid of its usual authority.
I sat on the edge of the leather sofa, holding Lucas protectively.
"Julian is Isabel's twin brother," Adrian began, staring at the floor. "He was supposed to inherit half of the shipping empire, but his gambling debts and alliances with rival Irish cartels nearly brought our entire operation down. I cut him off. I stripped him of his title and threw him out of the family."
"And Isabel?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"Isabel loved her brother blindly," Adrian whispered, a tear finally breaking free and rolling down his rough cheek. "When she went into labor six months early—the night our rivals firebombed our shipping warehouse—she was holding a phone. She was talking to Julian. He told her something that triggered a stress-induced hemorrhage. By the time I reached the hospital, she was gone, and Lucas was fighting for every breath in an incubator."
He looked up, meeting my eyes with raw desperation. "I didn't kill my wife, Hannah. I loved her more than my own life. But Julian... Julian blames me for taking his empire, and now he wants to destroy everything I have left. He wants me to feel the exact agony I caused him."
