Chapter 4 - The Truth on 4th Floor

We burst through the rusted fire-exit door of 412 Aldridge Street. The smell of boiled cabbage, damp plaster, and old bleach filled the hallway—a sharp, grim contrast to the golden grandeur of Graves Tower.

We bolted up four flights of creaky wooden stairs. My chest felt like it was on fire, but the thought of my mother pushed my legs forward.

"Apartment 3B!" I panted, pointing down the narrow corridor lined with peeling wallpaper.

The door to 3B was slightly ajar.

Nathaniel drew his gun, holding it close to his chest. He pushed me gently behind his back, signaling for me to stay silent. He kicked the door open and swept the room with his barrel.

"Sarah!" he called out softly.

The small living room was completely overturned. The faded floral couch was ripped open, cotton stuffing spilling across the worn carpet. My school books were scattered everywhere. The cheap wooden table where we ate our meals was smashed in half.

Sitting in a metal chair in the center of the room was my mother.

Her hands were bound behind her back with heavy plastic zipties. Her face was bruised, but her dark green eyes were wide open, full of pure terror—not for herself, but for me.

"Ruby!" she cried out, her voice raw. "Ruby, run! It’s a trap!"

"Sarah..." Nathaniel froze, his pistol lowering by an inch. His eyes softened, years of corporate brutality melting away in an instant as he looked at the woman he thought had died twelve years ago. "Sarah, it’s me. It’s Nathaniel."

"Nathaniel?" Sarah gasped, her eyes sweeping over his expensive suit and silver hair. "No... no, you weren't supposed to find us! I kept her away from you! I kept her away from all of it!"

"Why didn't you tell me you were alive?" Nathaniel stepped forward, dropping to his knees beside her chair, his hands hovering over her bruised face, afraid to touch her as if she were made of glass. "I would have protected you! I would have given you the world!"

"Because you became one of them!" Sarah sobbed, tears cutting clean lines through the dirt on her cheeks. "Look at you! You took over my father's company! You took his money, his power, his methods! You became the very monster we were running from!"

"I did it for vengeance!" Nathaniel yelled, his voice breaking. "I built this empire to burn down the men who stole you from me!"

"They didn't steal me!" Sarah shouted back. "I fled because I saw what that money was doing to you! And now... now you've brought Knox right to our door!"

"Too late for family reunions, I'm afraid," a smooth, feminine voice spoke from the shadows of the kitchen.

A woman in a sharp grey pantsuit stepped out, holding a sleek silver revolver fitted with a suppressor. She had cold blue eyes and blonde hair pulled back into a tight, flawless bun.

My breath caught in my throat.

It was Clara—the receptionist from the lobby of Graves Tower.
