Chapter 6 - The Vault of Shadows

Nathaniel burst back into the apartment, blood trickling down his temple from where Clara had struck him with her heels. Clara was lying motionless in the hallway behind him. He slammed the heavy door shut and threw the deadbolt.
"They're on the floor," Nathaniel panted, his face pale from loss of blood. "We have three minutes before they blow the hinges."
"There's no way out!" Sarah said frantically, looking at the window overlooking the four-story drop into the alley. "The fire escape on this side was cut down by the landlord last month!"
"There is one way," Nathaniel said. He pulled out his phone, hit a rapid sequence on the encrypted screen, and held it to his mouth. "Protocol Omega. Override the grid for Sector 4."
Suddenly, the lights in the apartment went out. Then, the power across the entire block flickered and died. The hum of the city outside vanished into total darkness.
"What did you do?" Sarah asked.
"I built this city’s power system, Sarah," Nathaniel said in the dark. "Do you really think I didn't build an escape route beneath the place where I knew you were hiding?"
He walked over to the rusted metal radiator in the corner of the small living room. He reached behind it, pulling a heavy iron lever hidden inside the wall.
With a loud mechanical groan, the entire back panel of our tiny kitchen wall slid sideways, revealing a hidden, illuminated concrete shaft with a steel ladder leading deep down into the dark.
I stared in absolute shock. "Our apartment... had a secret tunnel?"
"I bought this entire building ten years ago through a shell company," Nathaniel confessed, looking at Sarah. "I couldn't come near you without Knox's men finding you. So I stayed away. But I placed you here so I could monitor your security from afar. I paid off the local gangs to keep the block safe. The eviction notice... Knox’s corrupt real estate firm fabricated that three days ago to force you out into the open."
Sarah stared at Nathaniel, the anger in her eyes slowly melting into disbelief. "You... you were watching over us this whole time?"
"Every single day," Nathaniel whispered. "Now move! They're hitting the door!"
BOOM!
May you like
The front door shook violently under the blast of a breaching charge. Dust and splinters rained down on us.
Nathaniel pushed Sarah into the secret shaft, then pulled me in after her. He stepped in last, grabbing the heavy iron handle on the inside and pulling the hidden wall shut just as Knox’s men kicked the apartment door down, opening fire into the empty room.
