Chapter 8 - The Mastermind's Mask

"Julian?" Sarah gasped, her legs giving out. Nathaniel caught her before she hit the cold concrete ground. "You're... you're alive? But... father said—"
"Father lied to you, Sarah," Julian sneered, leaning against the catwalk railing. "Father knew you were too soft to inherit the Vance network. You wanted a quiet life with your little engineer boyfriend and your little family. So he helped me fake my death, training me in secret to take over the Syndicate from the shadows."
"Julian, this is insane!" Sarah cried out. "She is your niece! Ruby is twelve years old!"
"She is an obstacle!" Julian snapped, his refined voice twisting into ugly rage. "A mistake created by a runaway traitor and an ambitious commoner! Do you know how hard I worked to manipulate Knox, to construct this entire corporate trap? Nathaniel thought he conquered Graves Energy, but every board member he hired was mine. Every contract he signed had my hidden clauses!"
Julian pulled out a golden pocket watch, snapping it open.
"It is 11:50 PM," Julian said smoothly. "In ten minutes, the system auto-executes the liquidation protocol. The Vance empire, the Graves Energy grid, and three trillion dollars in global assets will be transferred directly into my offshore accounts. And you three... will be buried underneath two hundred feet of concrete."
"Julian, please!" Sarah begged, tears streaming down her face. "Take the money! Take everything! Just let Ruby live!"
"No," Nathaniel said quietly. He stepped in front of Sarah and me, looking up at Julian on the catwalk. "He won't let us live, Sarah. Because as long as Ruby exists, his ownership will always be illegal."
Nathaniel turned his head slightly toward me. In the shadow of his body, where Knox and Julian couldn't see, he slipped his silver pocket watch into my hand.
"Ruby," he whispered, so low only I could hear. "Inside this watch is a micro-chip card. It holds the emergency Override Code that your mother and I created twelve years ago. The terminal interface is right behind that blast door."
"Nathaniel, no..." I whispered, terror gripping my stomach.
"Listen to me, Ruby," he said, his silver eyes shining with absolute love and pride. "You walked into my tower today with eight hundred and fifty dollars in your hand just to do the right thing. You are braver than any billionaire in this city. When I give the signal, run for the Vault door. Don't look back."
"What about you and Mom?"
"I’m going to finish what I should have done twelve years ago," Nathaniel said.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic detonator.

"Julian!" Nathaniel shouted up at the catwalk, holding the detonator high in the air. "Did you really think I built this underground core without a self-destruct mechanism?"
Julian’s eyes widened in horror. "Shoot him! SHOOT HIM NOW!"
