Chapter 4 - Caught in the CrosshairsPanic spiked through my veins. There was no time to use the door.

I dove behind a heavy velvet floor-length curtain draped over the bay window just as the office door swung open.

“I told you, leave the documents on the desk,” Dae-sung’s voice drawled, dripping with annoyance.

A second voice answered—smooth, feminine, and terrifyingly familiar.

“You left the safe unlatched again, Uncle,” said Min-seo, Dae-sung’s ambitious twenty-four-year-old daughter and Chairman Kang’s favorite niece. She was supposed to be studying fashion design in Paris, but she had returned to Seoul three weeks ago. “If my grandfather’s nurses or security check this room, our entire operation goes up in smoke.”

Dae-sung chuckled darkly, pouring two glasses of scotch at the side bar. “The old man is half-dead, Min-seo. Once the restructuring goes through next Tuesday, we control seventy percent of the syndicate’s legal assets. Joon-ho is too busy snorting his allowance to notice, and the board is in our pocket.”

“And what about the American maid?” Min-seo asked, her tone sharpening. “She’s been asking questions in the kitchens. The maids say she didn't even flinch when Joon-ho broke the crystal pitcher.”

“Let her play detective,” Dae-sung replied dismissively, clinking his glass. “Tomorrow night, during the VIP charity gala at the Seoul Hotel, we execute the final wire transfer. And if the maid gets in the way... well, accidents happen in shipping warehouses every day.”

I stood motionless behind the velvet curtain, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

They weren't just stealing money. They were planning a coup. And they intended to frame me—or worse, eliminate me—before the week was out.
