Chapter 8 - THE GHOST IN THE MACHINEThe audio filled the cavernous space with startling clarity, bouncing off the ornate gold ceiling details and crystal chandeliers.

“...just make sure the vial is slipped into the private reserve before the toast. Harrington always drinks the 1945 first. Once he drops, we invoke clause 14 of the partnership agreement and take control of the voting shares...”

Marcus Thorne’s face drained of every remaining drop of color. The sophisticated, untouchable corporate titan vanished in an instant, replaced by a trapped animal staring down the barrel of a hunter's rifle.

The voice on the speakers was unmistakable. It was Marcus’s voice, crisp and cold, recorded not over a phone line, but through a high-gain directional mic planted weeks ago in the executive lounge of the Harrington Tower.

Julian Vance spun around, staring at Marcus with murderous rage. "You absolute fool! You discussed the contingency on an open frequency?"

"I didn't—that's a deepfake!" Marcus shouted, his voice cracking with panic, lunging forward a step before stopping dead as Bruno lowered his massive head, baring blunt, terrifying white teeth. "Harrington, that's digital manipulation! You know how easy it is to synthesize voice patterns nowadays!"

"It is," Alexander agreed mildly, lowering the empty champagne flute until it rested against a silver tray held by a passing waiter. "Which is why Miller didn't rely solely on audio."

Miller stepped further into the ballroom, holding up a small transparent evidence bag. Inside rested a pair of ultra-thin, matte-black nitrile gloves and a small glass ampoule with a rubber stopper—half-empty, bearing the exact chemical residue of the almond-scented alkaloid found in the spilled champagne.

"We found them in the private coat check, Mr. Harrington," Miller reported, his voice flat and professional. "Inside Mr. Thorne’s bespoke overcoat pocket. Along with a burner phone registered to a shell company in the Caymans that transferred fifty million dollars to an offshore account controlled by Mr. Thorne’s Swiss holdings this morning."

The silence in the ballroom was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning vents high above, and the heavy, rhythmic breathing of Bruno the mastiff.

Richard Sterling collapsed entirely, sliding down the side of the mahogany banquet table until he sat cross-legged on the marble floor, burying his face in his hands and weeping softly.

Julian Vance raised his hands, palms outward, stepping away from Marcus as if proximity to the doomed executive were contagious. "I had nothing to do with the ampoule, Alexander. You know my signature isn't on any Cayman wire transfers. I was played just as much as you were."

Alexander didn't answer Julian immediately. He turned his gaze slowly toward Marcus Thorne, whose chest was now heaving beneath his designer tuxedo jacket.
