Chapter 6 - THE HIDDEN DOSSIERI walked slowly out of the study and toward the coffee table, keeping my eyes fixed on Sloane’s tense, desperate face.

"What is this?" I asked, looking down at the manila envelope.

"It’s everything Preston didn't want you—or the federal investigators—to find," Sloane said, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. "When the bank accounts were frozen yesterday, I went back to his private office downtown before the feds arrived. I opened his personal wall safe using the override code he gave me when we were planning our 'new life' together."

I picked up the envelope, untied the cotton string, and slid out a thick stack of documents.

My eyes scanned the first page. Then the second.

And for the first time in over a hundred days, a genuine shock wave rippled through my composure.

This wasn't just about embezzled funds from the Westbridge escrow account. This wasn't just about a luxury penthouse in Tribeca or a few offshore shell companies in the British Virgin Islands.

This was a complete, systematic asset-stripping operation targeting the Hartwell Family Trust itself.

"He was working with your cousin Marcus," Sloane said quietly, watching my expression change with a grim, morbid satisfaction. "Marcus gave him insider access to the family trust's commercial real estate holdings three years ago. Preston was slowly siphoning equity out of your family's portfolio to fund his own private acquisitions under a dummy corporation called Apex Capital. If the Westbridge deal had gone through, he would have had enough leverage to force a hostile buyout of Hartwell Properties."

My heart hammered against my ribs—not out of fear, but out of cold, incandescent fury.

Marcus. My cousin Marcus—the smooth-talking corporate parasite whom my father had always coddled, the man we had welcomed into every holiday dinner and family board meeting—had been working hand-in-glove with Preston to dismantle our family’s legacy from the inside out.

"Why are you giving me this?" I asked, looking up from the documents to fix my gaze directly on Sloane. "If you had this, you could have used it as leverage against Preston. You could have tried to save yourself."

Sloane let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. "Leverage? With what? The moment Preston lost his CEO title and his money, he blocked my number. He texted me twenty minutes ago telling me that if I ever contacted him again, he would tell the police I acted alone in the embezzlement scheme and let me take the entire federal fall by myself."

She looked at me, her eyes wide with raw, unfiltered terror.

"He was going to throw me under the bus without a second thought. Just like he was doing to you. I’m ruined, Eleanor. My career is over, my apartment is gone, and the feds are going to be knocking on my door by tomorrow morning. The only thing I have left is the satisfaction of watching him burn completely to the ash."

I looked down at the dossier in my hands, feeling the cold, heavy weight of betrayal shift into absolute clarity.

Preston hadn't just cheated on me. He hadn't just stolen from his company. He had declared war on my entire family.

And unlike yesterday, this war wasn't going to be fought in the financial press or at a charity gala.

This was going to be total annihilation.
