Chapter 9 - THE CAGE CLOSESPreston stared around the room, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. He looked at Marcus—who was crying softly on the sofa—then at the investors, and finally back at me.
"Eleanor..." he whispered, his voice breaking completely. "Please. You can't let them do this. We were married for twenty years. You loved me."
I walked slowly across the room, stopping just a few feet away from him. The man who had once looked down on everyone around him was now forced to look up at me from the lowest point of his life.
"I did love you, Preston," I said quietly, my voice steady and crystal clear in the silent room. "For twenty years, I gave you my loyalty, my support, and my patience. I stood beside you while you built your career. And how did you repay me? By cheating on me, stealing from my family, and trying to destroy everything we built."
Preston shook his head frantically, tears streaming down his face. "I was ambitious! I wanted more! Doesn't that count for anything?"
"Ambition without integrity isn't success, Preston," my father said, standing up from his chair and walking over to stand beside me. "It’s just criminality wrapped in a designer suit."
Two local police officers stepped out of the private elevator behind Preston, their faces grim and professional.
"Mr. Hale?" one of the officers asked, stepping forward. "Preston Hale?"
Preston didn't answer. He just stared at me, his eyes filled with a pathetic, desperate plea for a mercy he had never earned.
"You have the right to remain silent," the officer continued, reading him his rights as he grabbed Preston’s arms and turned him around. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
As the officers led him toward the elevator, Preston looked back over his shoulder one last time.
"Eleanor!" he screamed, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Eleanor, please!"

The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off his cries, and swallowed him into the dark.
I stood there in the quiet living room, surrounded by my family, and felt a profound, beautiful sense of peace settle over my soul.
