Chapter 4 - The Guest List and the GhostThe evening air over Manhattan was crisp and biting as limousines lined up outside the East 72nd Street townhouse. Floodlights illuminated the neo-Georgian facade, casting a theatrical glow over the red carpet where photographers clicked their cameras furiously.

Inside, the ballroom was a masterpiece of winter roses, ivory candles, and crystal chandeliers. String quartet music drifted gently through the vaulted ceilings, mingling with the muted chatter of elite society members, politicians, and corporate titans.
At the center of it all stood Celeste Rowan.
She was breathtaking. Dressed in a custom-designed, off-the-shoulder emerald gown that cost more than a working-class family's annual income, she glided among the guests with effortless grace. She laughed at a senator's joke, accepted a compliment from a tech billionaire, and adjusted a floral arrangement with manicured perfection.
To anyone looking in, she was the picture of philanthropic grace—the soon-to-be Mrs. Grant Mercer, queen of the social circuit.
Yet, beneath her serene smile, a subtle tension tugged at the corners of her mouth.
She glanced at her diamond watch for the fourth time in ten minutes.
Where is Grant?
He was supposed to arrive by 6:30 PM to walk the red carpet with her before the cameras. His corporate handlers had assured her he was finishing up an emergency meeting at Northstar headquarters, but a strange, icy knot had formed in her stomach ever since her brief encounter with that wretched delivery man in the morning.
There had been something about his voice—something heavy, authoritative, and entirely too calm—that had unsettled her. But she had shaken it off. A delivery worker in a cheap cap could never threaten her empire. Within six weeks, she would legally own half of everything Grant Mercer possessed.
"Celeste, darling!"
A sharp, grating voice broke her concentration. It was socialite Evelyn Vance, wrapped in suffocating layers of mink. "The floral arrangements are simply divine! And I hear Grant is announcing a massive endowment for the foundation tonight. You truly have a Midas touch, dear."
Celeste flashed her brightest, most practiced smile. "Thank you, Evelyn. Grant and I believe deeply in giving back. Every child deserves a proper foundation in life."
As if on cue, the heavy oak doors at the grand entrance swung open.
The murmurs in the room died down instantly. All heads turned toward the foyer.
Except, it wasn't Grant Mercer walking through the doors.

It was a small, quiet figure in a plain, faded blue dress.
Elena Ruiz walked into the grand ballroom, holding the hand of her three-year-old daughter, Maisie, who was clutching her yellow plastic toy truck. Behind them stood Mrs. Gable, looking grim and resolute, holding a sealed manila envelope.
