Chapter 6 - The Secret RoomThe heavy stone corridors of the estate's lower level were freezing, smelling faintly of damp earth and old paper. The only sound was the distant, rhythmic pounding of the Atlantic waves against the cliffside foundations far below.

Julian moved with the practiced, silent stride of a man who had trained in self-defense tactical courses, his eyes scanning the gloom. Elena stayed a half-step behind him, the heavy brass poker raised, her senses dialed to maximum alertness.
Clack.
Another sound—this time closer, coming from behind a heavy oak door marked with an old iron plaque that read: PRIVATE ARCHIVES - AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
Julian didn't hesitate. He kicked the door open with a single, brutal strike of his boot, the wood splintering inward as he lunged into the pitch-black room, his tactical knife flashing in the faint light spilling from the hallway.
"Freeze!" Julian roared.
A sharp gasp echoed from the darkness. A slim figure tumbled backward against a tall wooden bookshelf, sending a cascade of ancient leather-bound ledgers crashing to the floor in a cloud of dust.
Julian lunged forward, pressing the intruder against the wall with his forearm, the blade hovering inches from their throat.
"Turn on the lights, Elena," Julian commanded without looking back.
Elena rushed to the wall, flipping a brass toggle switch. Warm amber light flooded the room, illuminating rows of towering bookshelves, antique maps, and a massive mahogany desk covered in old corporate files.
And pinned against the wall beneath Julian’s arm was not an assassin, nor a corporate spy.
It was Mrs. Gable, the silver-haired housekeeper, her face pale, her breathing ragged, clutching a thick manila folder tightly to her chest.
"Mr... Mr. Castellane," Mrs. Gable choked out, her eyes wide with terror as she stared at the blade near her neck. "Please... I wasn't... I didn't mean any harm."
Julian slowly lowered the knife, though his stance remained coiled like a striking viper. "What are you doing down here in the private archives at two in the morning, Mrs. Gable? And why did you break the lock on the restricted cabinet?"
Mrs. Gable slid down the wall, trembling, her hands shaking as she clutched the manila folder. "I... I was looking for your father's old journals, sir. I heard noises outside and thought... thought someone had broken in."
"You lied to me," Elena said, stepping forward, the brass poker still gripped tightly in her hand. She pointed down at the floor near the ruined bookshelf. "There was no noise outside. We heard you dropping files because you were trying to empty that safe before someone caught you."
Julian looked down. Half-hidden beneath the fallen ledgers was a heavy iron wall safe, its door swinging open, empty.
Julian's eyes darkened into an abyss of absolute fury. He knelt down, snatching the manila folder from Mrs. Gable’s trembling fingers. He flipped it open, scanning the faded yellow papers inside.
As his eyes scanned the first page, the color completely drained from his face.
"What is that?" Elena asked softly, stepping closer.
Julian looked up slowly, his voice hollow, completely devoid of life. "This is the original autopsy report and corporate acquisition contract from my mother's death twenty years ago."
Mrs. Gable burst into tears, covering her face with her wrinkled hands. "I had to, Mr. Castellane! They threatened my family just like they threatened yours! The people who poisoned your mother... they're the same ones running your board of directors today. And they're coming for Chloe."
Before Julian could demand answers, the entire mansion plunged into sudden, suffocating darkness.
The backup generator outside died with a loud, mechanical pop.

And then, through the thick, salt-heavy air, came the unmistakable sound of heavy boots marching across the gravel driveway outside.
They weren't security guards. They were a hit squad.
