Chapter 8 - The Escape Through the StormThe attic crawlspace was pitch black, smelling of dust and old cedar. Rain hammered violently against the slate roof above them like a thousand tiny hammers, drowning out the muffled shouts echoing from the bedroom they had just vacated.

"Keep your head down and follow the beam of my flashlight," Julian whispered over his shoulder, moving with cat-like stealth through the narrow wooden rafters.
Elena clutched Chloe tightly against her chest with one arm, using her other hand to steady herself against rough wooden beams. The little girl was shivering violently, her small fingers gripping Elena's jacket so hard her knuckles were white.
"You're okay, sweetheart, I've got you," Elena murmured against Chloe's dark curls, her own heart hammering against her ribs with terrifying velocity.
Suddenly, a bright beam of tactical white light cut through the attic slats behind them.
"Sector four is clear! Check the roof access!" a harsh voice shouted from the master bedroom below.
Julian stopped instantly, pressing his back against a brick chimney stack. He raised his pistol, aiming back toward the hidden entrance panel.
"Elena," Julian whispered without turning around. "The service ladder is ten yards ahead behind the water tank. It drops straight down into the cliffside ravine path. Go. Now."
"And you?" Elena hissed back, her voice tight with panic. "I'm not leaving you to cover the rear alone!"
"If I don't buy you two minutes, none of us make it off this cliff alive," Julian said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, unbreakable finality. "Take my daughter, Elena. That's an order."
Before she could argue, Julian spun around and fired three rapid shots back through the attic floorboards, shattering the wood and eliciting a loud curse from below.
"Go!" he roared.
Elena didn't look back. Pushing down the overwhelming wave of terror, she scrambled through the low rafters until her hand brushed against the cold metal rungs of the service ladder tucked behind the brick water tank.
She hauled Chloe over the edge, descending the vertical rungs one-handed while the little girl clung to her back like a frightened koala. Above them, the sharp, deafening cracks of gunfire echoed through the stormy night, followed by the sound of shouting and shattering glass.
When Elena’s boots finally hit the wet gravel at the base of the cliffside ravine, the freezing rain hit her face like needles. The Atlantic Ocean churned wildly just twenty feet away, white foam spraying up against the jagged rocks.
"Elena! Over here!"
A frail, trembling voice called out from the shadows near a rusted iron gate.
Elena spun around, pistol raised, weapon shaking in her hand.
It was Mrs. Gable, standing beside the open door of an old utility tunnel, holding a heavy emergency flashlight.
"Quickly! Before they secure the perimeter," Mrs. Gable urged, grabbing Elena's arm and pulling her and Chloe into the damp, subterranean tunnel.
They ran through the maze of stone corridors until they emerged at a hidden private dock tucked inside a natural sea cave. Bobbing gently against the wooden pier was a high-powered Zodiac speedboat, its engine idling quietly.
Standing on the dock, holding a satellite phone to his ear, was a man in a crisp federal trench coat.
He turned around as Elena stumbled onto the wooden planks.
"Mrs. Vasquez?" the man asked sharply, flashing a silver badge. "Agent Vance, FBI Anticorruption Division. Mr. Castellane called us twenty minutes ago."
Elena gasped for air, clutching Chloe, who was now crying softly. "He's still up at the mansion! There are armed men—"
"I know," Agent Vance interrupted grimly, pulling out a tactical tablet showing thermal imaging of the estate above. "We have tactical units surrounding the property right now. But Mr. Castellane just triggered the main mainframe lock. He's locking down the entire corporate server from inside the master study."

Elena stared up toward the dark, burning silhouette of the mansion against the stormy sky.
"He's not trying to escape," Elena whispered, horror dawning on her. "He's trapping them with him."
