Chapter 7 - Siege on the Cliff"Get down!" Julian yelled, lunging across the room and hauling Mrs. Gable behind the heavy mahogany desk just as the first window in the grand foyer shattered with an explosive crash.

Glass rained across the marble floor. Shouts echoed from the main hallway—cold, professional, coordinated commands in the dark.

"They're breaching the front entrance," Julian muttered, his tactical knife already replaced by a heavy-caliber semi-automatic pistol he pulled from a hidden magnetic holster beneath the desk. He checked the clip with expert fluidity.

Elena crouched low beside him, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "How did they find us so fast? We left the hotel less than two hours ago!"

"GPS tracker," Julian said grimly, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "Not on the car. In the medical transport file I downloaded for your son. One of my own board members must have authorized the security ping."

He turned to Mrs. Gable, who was shaking uncontrollably, clutching a rosary in her trembling hands. "Mrs. Gable, listen to me. There is a panic room built into the foundations behind the wine cellar. Take the service tunnel. Get to the cliffside dock where the emergency Zodiac boat is moored. Wait for my signal."

"And you, Mr. Castellane?" the old woman cried softly. "They'll kill you!"

"Not if we clear a path," Julian snapped. He turned his piercing gaze to Elena, his hand gripping her shoulder with bone-crushing intensity. "Elena. Take Chloe. She’s sleeping in the third-floor master suite. Wake her up, wrap her in a dark blanket, and take her through the north attic crawlspace out to the perimeter fence. Do not look back. Do not stop for anyone."

"I'm not leaving you here to die," Elena said fiercely, her eyes locking onto his. "My son needs his mother, yes—but I am not running away like a coward while someone tries to murder a little girl in her sleep!"

Julian stared at her for a fraction of a second, stunned by the sheer defiance in her voice. Then, a grim, fierce smile broke through his tense expression.

"God help me, Elena," he muttered, pulling a second compact pistol from his holster and shoving it forcefully into her hand. "Take the safety off. Aim for center mass. Let's go."

They burst out of the archives into the pitch-black hallway. The mansion around them was echoing with the brutal sounds of forced entry—heavy boots stomping on hardwood floors, muffled shouts, and the unmistakable metallic click of weapon slides being racked.

They sprinted up the spiral staircase toward the third-floor residential wing, moving like ghosts through the shadows.

As they reached the top landing, the door to Chloe's bedroom swung open.

A tall man in a tactical black balaclava stepped out into the hallway, holding a silenced submachine gun, his eyes scanning the darkness. He froze as he saw Elena and Julian standing at the top of the stairs.

Before the intruder could raise his weapon, Julian fired twice.

Bang! Bang!

The man dropped instantly, slumping against the wall.

"Move!" Julian hissed, grabbing Elena's arm and dragging her toward Chloe's room.

They pushed the door open. The room was dark, lit only by the pale moonlight streaming through the shattered window.

Chloe was sitting up in bed, trembling, her eyes wide with terror. "Dad? What's happening?"

Elena rushed to the bed, tearing a heavy wool blanket off the footboard and wrapping it around the little girl's shoulders. "We're going on an adventure, sweetheart. Just like we practiced. Hold onto my neck tight, and don't make a sound."

Chloe threw her arms around Elena's neck, burying her face in her shoulder.

Julian stood at the doorway, weapon raised, listening intently to the hallway below. "They're on the second floor. They'll be at this stairwell in thirty seconds."

He turned to Elena, his face pale in the moonlight, his voice dropping an octave as he looked at his daughter and then straight into Elena's eyes.

"Elena... if I don't make it out of this estate tonight... promise me you'll take her. Promise me you'll get her to the federal prosecutor in the city."

May you like

"You're going to tell her yourself," Elena said, her voice shaking, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she gripped Chloe tighter. "Now move!"

Julian kicked open the hidden attic access panel behind the bedroom closet just as heavy boots pounded up the final flight of stairs outside.
