Chapter 10 - The New EmpireSix months later, the headlines in the New York Tribune screamed across the front page: FALL OF THE SHADOW JUDGE: FEDERAL CORRUPTION SCANDAL LEADS TO LIFE SENTENCES FOR VANCE AND THORNE.

Inside the federal penitentiary in upstate New York, Julian Vance sat in a stark, fluorescent-lit holding cell, staring out the reinforced glass window at the gray concrete yard. His expensive black tuxedo was gone, replaced by standard-issue orange cotton. The scar across his eyelid seemed more prominent than ever against his sunken, defeated face.

He had tried to reach out to his old network, but every door was bolted shut. Every offshore account had been frozen. Every associate had vanished.

The Moreland empire hadn't fallen. It had expanded.

Back in Oyster Bay, Adrian Moreland sat at his father's old mahogany desk in the private study. The scorched ledger of twenty years ago was safely locked away in the wall safe, replaced by new blueprints, legitimate shipping contracts, and philanthropic foundations bearing his mother's name.

The rose garden outside was blooming again, its red and white petals vibrant under the warm April sun.

Victor Hale walked into the study, placing a fresh glass of Scotch on the desk alongside the morning financial reports.

"Everything is locked down, Boss," Victor reported, a satisfied grin touching his silver temples. "The port authority approved our new terminal expansion in Brooklyn. Not a single obstacle left from the old guard."

Adrian took a slow sip of his drink, looking out past the rose garden toward the long, winding driveway of the estate.

He thought back to that stormy October night—to the champagne glasses, the glittering chandeliers, the treacherous handshake beneath the linen table, and the tiny four-year-old girl who had changed the course of history with six simple words.

“Look under the table, sir.”

Adrian set his glass down, a calm, unbreakable confidence settling deep within his bones.

"Let them look," Adrian murmured softly to himself, the ghost of his past finally laid to rest forever. "We own the room now."
