Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Oyster BayThe grandfather clock in the corner of the study ticked away the seconds like a countdown to an explosion.

Adrian walked past Claire without another word, stepping out into the hallway where Rachel Dawson and little Emma waited. The nanny looked terrified, her hands nervously wringing the hem of her apron. She had served the Moreland household for seven years, ever since Emma was a baby, and she had always kept her head down, minding her own business.
Until tonight.
Adrian knelt down until he was at eye level with the four-year-old girl. Up close, Emma’s blue eyes were startlingly clear, devoid of the complex terror that paralyzed adults, operating purely on instinct.
"Emma," Adrian said, his voice softer than it had been with Claire. "How do you know that man?"
The little girl clutched her spiral-bound drawing pad tighter against her chest. She looked up at her mother for permission, and Rachel gave a trembling, desperate nod.
"He lives in the tall gray house by the lighthouse," Emma whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the hallway heater. "He comes to the garden when the sun goes down. He gave me a silver candy wrapper and told me to give a secret message to the lady in the white dress."
Adrian’s jaw tightened. "What was the message, sweetheart?"
Emma opened her drawing pad. On the page was a crude, childlike crayon drawing of a man with a scarred eyelid standing next to a burning house. Beneath it, written in shaky, blocky capital letters that clearly weren't drawn by a child, were the words: YOUR TIME IS UP.
"He said if I didn't give it to her," Emma continued, her bottom lip quivering, "he would take Mommy away and put her in the dark water where the fish sleep."
Victor stepped forward, his face dark with suppressed fury. "Boss, that bastard has been watching the estate for weeks. He used the child as a courier because he knew security cameras wouldn't flag a four-year-old wandering near the service entrance."
"He didn't just use her as a courier," Adrian said, standing up slowly. His height, combined with the cold, absolute stillness of his posture, made him look like a predatory statue. "He sent a message to me, through a child, to prove he could reach inside my fortress whenever he pleased."
Back in the study, Claire had collapsed into the blue velvet chair, her face buried in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, wracking sobs.
Adrian walked back inside and stood over her.
"Twenty years ago," Adrian said, his voice dangerously low, "Julian Vance walked into my father's study and stole three million dollars in bearer bonds before setting fire to the west wing. My father ran into that fire to save his ledger, and the ceiling collapsed on him. They found his wedding ring melted to his finger."
Claire looked up, her eyes bloodshot and wide with horror. "I didn't know who he was, Adrian! I swear to God I didn't!"
"You were holding his hand, Claire. You were squeezing it so hard your knuckles turned white. People who don't know each other don't touch like that under a table while celebrating an engagement."
"He threatened my brother!" Claire shrieked, the dam finally breaking. She stood up, her fists clenched, staring wildly into his unblinking eyes. "Two weeks ago, my brother Leo got mixed up in online crypto debts with the Russian syndicate in Brighton Beach. They were going to chop off his fingers one by one. I got a call from an unknown number. It was Vance. He said he would clear my brother's debt and give us safe passage out of the country... if I agreed to wear a specific necklace to the engagement party and sit beside a stranger at the head table."

Adrian stared at her. "A Trojan horse."
"Yes!" she cried, grabbing his lapels. "He said he didn't want to kill you at first—he just wanted to ruin you publicly, to make you look like a fool in front of every crime boss and politician in the Tri-State area before he took everything you built. But tonight... when Emma told you to look under the table... everything changed. He looked at you, Adrian. And I saw something in his eyes. He isn't just here to ruin you. He's here to finish what he started twenty years ago."
