Chapter 10 - Ashes of the EmpireThe glass-and-steel monolith of Vance Tower pierced the Manhattan skyline like a glittering obsidian knife. Inside the grand penthouse ballroom, hundreds of wealthy elite, corporate executives, and corrupt board members mingled under crystal chandeliers, sipping champagne, completely unaware that the ground beneath their feet was about to cave in.

Viktor Vance stood at the podium on the elevated stage, a silver-haired, impeccably tailored man in his late sixties with cold, predatory eyes. He raised a crystal flute, smiling smoothly at the crowd.

"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight marks a historic transition," Viktor’s amplified voice boomed across the ballroom. "With Lawson Enterprises facing insurmountable restructuring, and our upcoming majority share acquisition..."

The heavy double doors at the back of the grand ballroom suddenly swung open with a resounding bang.

Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.

A phalanx of federal marshals marched in, parting down the middle to reveal three figures walking with absolute, unyielding authority.

Richard Lawson walked on the left, his tall frame radiating supreme confidence. Cole Vance walked on the right, his eyes locked onto his uncle with lethal intensity.

And right down the center walked me.

I wore a stunning, floor-length crimson gown that hugged my six-month pregnant belly, my hair cascading in waves over my shoulders, my newly repaired smile shining with cold, triumphant beauty. I didn't look like a battered victim anymore. I looked like a queen reclaiming her throne.

Viktor Vance dropped his champagne flute. The crystal shattered on the hardwood stage, splashing golden liquid across his polished shoes. Color drained entirely from his face.

"What... what is this?" Viktor stammered into the microphone, his hands trembling slightly. "Security! Remove these intruders!"

Not a single security guard moved. They couldn't—federal agents had already locked down every exit in the building.

My father stepped up to the base of the stage, holding a thick manila folder high in the air so every camera from the live broadcast media could capture it clearly.

"You're out of moves, Viktor," my father’s voice echoed crisply through the grand ballroom's sound system. "Federal indictments for corporate racketeering, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder. Signed by the Attorney General thirty minutes ago."

Viktor’s face turned purple with rage. He slammed his fists onto the podium. "You think a few warrants stop me? My syndicate controls half the city! You're nothing—"

"He's not alone, Uncle," Cole interrupted, stepping up onto the stage, staring down the man who had murdered his parents.

From behind the side curtains, federal agents marched a second prisoner out into the glaring lights of the ballroom.

It was Trevor Hayes.

He was still wearing his Rikers Island orange jumpsuit, his hair matted, his face pale and weeping openly as federal agents pushed him forward toward the stage.

"Trevor?!" Viktor gasped, his eyes bulging. "You fool—"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Vance! They offered a plea deal!" Trevor sobbed hysterically, pointing a shaking finger at Viktor. "He made me do it! He said if I didn't marry Rebecca and steal her father's empire, he would ruin my family! He ordered the hit on the estate!"

The entire ballroom erupted into chaotic uproar. Reporters shoved microphones forward, cameras flashing blindingly in every direction. The live broadcast was streaming to millions of homes across the nation.

Viktor realized the game was over. A dark, feral snarl twisted his features, and he suddenly reached inside his tailored suit jacket, drawing a hidden snub-nosed revolver.

"If I'm going down, I'm taking you all with me!" Viktor roared, raising the barrel straight toward me.

Time seemed to slow down to a crawl.

Before Viktor could pull the trigger, Cole moved with blinding, predator speed. He lunged across the stage, tackling his uncle hard to the floor just as the gun went off.

Bang!

The bullet shattered a ceiling chandelier overhead, sending a shower of crystal shards raining down onto the stage.

Within a microsecond, four federal agents swarmed the pile, pinning Viktor face-down to the floor, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with decisive finality.

"Viktor Vance, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy, and attempted assassination," the lead federal agent declared, hauling the struggling, screaming older man to his feet and dragging him out of the ballroom.

Trevor stood sobbing near the edge of the stage, looking across the room at me with pathetic, desperate eyes. "Rebecca... please... we have a history... remember when we painted the living room?"

I stopped walking, turning to look down at the pathetic wreck of a man who had once tried to break my spirit. I touched my baby bump, felt her strong, reassuring kick, and smiled.

"That house is painted white now, Trevor," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the silent, awestruck room. "And I'm never looking back."

As federal agents dragged Trevor away behind his master, my father and Cole walked up to stand beside me, framing me on both sides like a fortress wall.

The cameras flashed, capturing the definitive end of the nightmare and the birth of a new empire. I placed one hand on my glowing belly, ready for whatever tomorrow brought, knowing one absolute truth:

Nobody would ever break me again.
