Chapter 9 - The Family SecretThe hidden subterranean panic room beneath the Lawson estate was a fortress of steel, reinforced concrete, and glowing computer monitors. Emergency generators had finally kicked in, flooding the bunker with bright, clinical white light.

My father sat at the central command console, his face bruised from the skirmish, his eyes locked onto Cole Vance with intense, unfiltered hostility.
"Explain yourself, Cole," my father demanded, resting his hand near his firearm. "Why should I believe you aren't just another viper sent by your uncle to finish the job?"
Cole stood calmly near the steel blast door, unzipping his tactical vest and tossing it onto a leather chair. He looked exhausted, his dark hair disheveled, but his amber eyes burned with absolute sincerity.
"If I wanted you dead, Richard, I wouldn't have just saved your daughter and granddaughter upstairs," Cole replied evenly. He turned his gaze toward me, sitting on the velvet sofa with Emma safely playing with a stuffed rabbit on my lap. "Rebecca... I'm sorry about what my family put you through. Trevor Hayes wasn't acting alone. Viktor used Trevor to infiltrate your life because he knew your father’s primary vulnerability was you."
"Why?" I asked, my voice trembling as I clutched my swollen belly. "Why target me? What does Viktor want with my father?"
Cole walked over to the central console, tapping a few keys. A massive holographic screen flickered to life above the desk, displaying a complex web of corporate shell companies, offshore bank accounts, and secret land deeds.
"Lawson Enterprises sits on top of the largest untapped rare-earth mineral reserve in the Northeast," Cole explained, pointing to a highlighted tract of land. "Decades ago, my grandfather and your father started their real estate empire together. But when my grandfather tried to illegally seize lands and displace families, your father exposed him, sent him to federal prison, and took sole control of the company."
My father’s jaw clenched. "Viktor has spent forty years trying to steal back what he believes was rightfully his," Richard muttered. "He used Trevor to trap Rebecca, marry into the family, and quietly acquire enough proxy shares to execute a hostile buyout from the inside."
"And when Trevor failed and got arrested," Cole added, stepping closer, "Viktor panicked. The feds are closing in on his syndicate accounts. That's why he sent those hit squads tonight. He wanted to eliminate witnesses and force you to drop the corporate lawsuits."
I stared at Cole, processing the staggering weight of the conspiracy. "So... you're Viktor's nephew. Why betray him?"
Cole’s expression darkened, a shadow of deep personal pain crossing his face. "Because twenty years ago, Viktor murdered my parents when they tried to walk away from the syndicate. I've spent my entire adult life deep undercover inside my uncle's organization, waiting for the exact right moment to destroy him from the inside out. And you, Rebecca... your courage in standing up to Trevor gave us the opening we needed."
My father looked from Cole to me, a slow, calculated realization dawning in his eyes. He stood up, walking over to Cole, and slowly extended his hand.
"An enemy of Viktor Vance is a temporary friend of mine," Richard said, his voice measured. "Prove you're on our side, Cole. How do we take him down once and for all?"
Cole shook my father’s hand firmly, a cold, confident smile spreading across his face.
"We don't wait for him to attack us again," Cole said quietly. "Tomorrow morning, Viktor is holding an emergency shareholders' gala at his Manhattan penthouse to finalize the hostile takeover of Lawson Corp. We aren't going to hide in this bunker. We are going to walk through his front doors, present the federal indictments live on national television, and burn his entire empire to ash."
I looked down at Emma, then placed my hand gently on my swollen stomach. The fear that had paralyzed me days ago was completely gone.
"I'm going with you," I said, standing up tall.

Cole looked at me, surprise and deep admiration flashing in his amber eyes. "It's going to be dangerous, Rebecca."
"Good," I replied, my voice hard as diamonds. "Because I'm done running."
