Chapter 6 - The Visitor in the ShadowsThree weeks passed in a blur of legal depositions, medical checkups, and absolute luxury. Living back at the Lawson Estate felt like being wrapped in silk and steel. My father had surrounded me with twenty-four-hour security, private nurses, and top-tier specialists who monitored every heartbeat of my unborn baby.

Yet, an uneasy feeling gnawed at the back of my mind.

Trevor was locked away in Rikers Island, awaiting trial. His assets were frozen, his apartment was seized, and his co-conspirators had all fled or turned state's evidence. On paper, he was completely neutralized.

So why did I feel like we were still being watched?

It was Tuesday evening when the answer arrived in the most unexpected way possible.

I was sitting in the conservatory, sipping herbal tea and reading a bedtime story to Emma, who had finally fallen asleep against my shoulder. The sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long, purple shadows across the glass greenhouse walls.

"Mrs. Hayes?"

A soft voice broke the quiet. I turned around to see Mrs. Gable standing near the entrance, holding a silver tray with a single, unlabelled white envelope resting upon it.

"What is this, Mrs. Gable?" I asked, gently transferring sleeping Emma to the nanny who stood nearby.

"A courier dropped it off at the outer security gate, ma'am," Mrs. Gable said nervously, her eyes wide. "The guards checked it for explosives and toxins—it's clean. But they said it's addressed specifically to you, in handwriting that matches nothing in our database."

My heart did a sudden, uncomfortable flutter. I picked up the envelope. Heavy cardstock. No return address.

I tore open the flap and slid out a single sheet of thick parchment.

Written in bold, jagged black ink were words that made the blood run cold in my veins:

“You think putting Trevor away solved everything? You caught the pawn, Rebecca. But you have no idea who owns the board. Drop the corporate lawsuits against Hayes-Corp by midnight tomorrow, or the next person bleeding won't be Trevor. It will be your father.”

My hands began to shake violently.

There was no signature. Just a small, chilling emblem stamped in red wax at the bottom of the page—a coiled viper.

"Rebecca?"

My father’s voice echoed from the doorway as he strode into the conservatory, loosening his tie. He stopped the moment he saw the look of absolute terror frozen on my face. He crossed the room in two long strides, snatching the letter from my trembling fingers.

Richard read it once. Twice.

With every second, the color drained from his face, replaced by a terrifying, dark fury that I had never witnessed before—not even the day he punched Trevor.

"Who delivered this?" my father demanded, his voice dropping to a lethal growl.

"A... a courier at the gate," I whispered, clutching my arms. "Dad... what is this? Who is Evelyn Vance really working for? Trevor was just a middle manager! How could he afford a corporate conspiracy on his own?"

My father didn't answer immediately. He stared at the red wax seal of the coiled viper, his hands clenching into iron fists until his knuckles turned pure white.

"I thought I killed that snake ten years ago," Richard muttered, more to himself than to me.

"Dad, talk to me! Who are we dealing with?"

Richard looked down at me, his eyes filled with a terrifying realization. "Not a rival developer. Not a disgruntled employee. We are dealing with Viktor Vance—Evelyn’s uncle, and the head of the Vance Syndicate. The man who tried to bankrupt Lawson Enterprises a decade ago, and the man who apparently financed Trevor’s entire life from the shadows."

Before I could process the sheer magnitude of the revelation, the entire mansion's interior lights suddenly flickered and died.

The sprawling estate plunged into pitch-black darkness.
