Chapter 2 - The Audit of ShadowsBefore Evelyn could answer, my secure desktop terminal chimed—a sharp, automated double-beep signaling an incoming data stream from my private forensic accountant downtown.

“Stay right there,” I warned Evelyn, keeping my eyes locked on her before turning to the monitor.
I punched in my master override key. A file titled MARBLE_COR_AUDIT.enc decrypted onto the screen. My eyes scanned the lines of corporate routing numbers, shell entities, and secondary signatories. The missing $8,400 wasn't being funneled into a local bank account in Evelyn’s name. It was being routed through a phantom LLC registered under an address three miles away—a defunct import-export warehouse down by the South Chicago docks.
A warehouse owned by Dominic Rossi.
Rossi. My primary rival on the North Side docks, a man who had been trying to infiltrate my supply lines for six months.
I slowly turned back around, staring at Evelyn with a look that made her take an involuntary step backward.
“Dominic Rossi,” I said, letting the name hang in the cold air of the study. “He’s paying you to siphon operational data from inside my house, isn't he? The duplicate invoices weren't just pocket change. They were coded data packets disguised as maintenance costs.”
Evelyn’s face drained of all color. The clinical, arrogant facade cracked completely, revealing a woman who realized she had sold her soul to the wrong devil.
“He... he threatened my family,” Evelyn whispered, her voice finally breaking. “My son’s gambling debts. Rossi bought the notes. He said if I didn't feed him staff schedules and maintenance layouts of the estate’s security grid, my son would end up in an industrial grinder.”
“And torturing a four-year-old child with a bad leg was just collateral damage?” I snapped, slamming my hand against the edge of the desk.

“I didn't know he’d target them,” she sobbed, collapsing into a chair. “I just rubber-stamped the rejections. I didn't know!”
“Ignorance isn't an alibi in this house, Evelyn,” I said coldly. “Norah, take her down to the lower security holding room. Lock the door. We’ll deal with her when I get back.”
