Chapter 6 - The Drive Through the MistThe rain began to fall in sheets as I sped down the winding mountain road toward the old family cabin. The headlights of my sedan cut through the thick, eerie fog rolling off the lake, painting ghostly shapes among the towering pine trees.

My mind raced with terrifying scenarios. Why would Veronica be waiting for Trevor at the lake? Did she help Eleanor acquire the drugs? Or was there an even deeper conspiracy at play—one involving Trevor himself?
No, a small voice in my head argued. Trevor was shocked. He cried. Was he crying for his sons, or was he crying because his mother got caught? another, darker voice whispered back.
I gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned white. The road grew narrower, unpaved and slick with mud, winding deep into the woods where cell service flickered and died.
As I crested the final hill, the old wooden boathouse came into view. Trevor’s car was parked haphazardly near the rotting wooden dock, its engine ticking as it cooled in the damp night air. A few yards away, the lights of the main cabin glowed faintly through rain-streaked windows.
I cut my headlights, letting my car coast silently to a stop behind a thick cluster of cedar trees. I reached into the glove compartment, my fingers brushing against the heavy metal casing of a flashlight and my emergency pepper spray. It wasn't much against a killer, but it was all I had.
Stepping out into the freezing rain, the icy droplets instantly soaked through my black funeral dress, chilling me to the bone. Every footstep on the wet pine needles sounded deafeningly loud in the quiet woods.
As I crept closer to the cabin, the sound of raised voices drifted through the warped wooden slats of the back window.
"...you absolute fool!" a woman's voice hissed angrily. It was Veronica. "Your mother was supposed to handle it quietly! She wasn't supposed to get caught, and she certainly wasn't stupid enough to leave a paper trail!"
"I didn't know!" Trevor’s voice shouted back, sounding desperate and defensive. "My mother never told me about the trust documents or the poison! You knew about this?"
May you like
"Of course I knew!" Veronica snapped back. "My father invested half a million into your mother's real estate scheme to secure our future! We needed that money freed up, Trevor! And those brats were draining every cent you earned!"
My breath hitched in my throat. Trevor didn't just know about the financial pressure—he was tied to Veronica in the plot long before the twins were even born. The betrayal was complete. It wasn't just a monstrous mother-in-law; it was a conspiracy involving my own husband.
