Chapter 4 - The Twelve-Year LieThe judge ordered an immediate recess to review the federal indictments, giving us forty-eight hours before the formal arraignment on treason and perjury charges.
As the guards hauled Caleb and Victoria away in handcuffs, flashing cameras blinded them from every angle outside the courthouse steps. I stood on the grand stone portico, letting the cold afternoon wind hit my face.
My attorney walked up beside me, shaking his head in sheer disbelief. "Mara... twelve years. You kept that entire classified life a complete secret. Even when your own family tore you to shreds, you didn't break."
"My father taught me how to hold a line," I replied quietly, looking out over the city skyline.
Then, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was an encrypted ping from a secure military frequency. I tapped the screen and read the text:
Target secured. The financial freeze on Bennett Meridian Systems is complete. Operation Homecoming is a success. Report to the Pentagon at 0800.
I stared at the screen, a bittersweet knot tightening in my chest. My father had known he was dying. He had known Caleb and Victoria were plotting against the company, and against me. He had orchestrated this entire trap from his hospital bed, using me as the ultimate shield to protect both national security and his legacy.
"What's next, Major?" my lawyer asked, using the rank that everyone in this city was suddenly terrified of.
I slipped my phone back into my pocket, adjusted my collar, and looked down at the street where my mother and brother were being loaded into a black van.
"Now," I said, a cold, sharp smile touching my lips, "we take back the company. And then, we dig into the archives to find out why my mother was so desperate to erase my past in the first place."
