Chapter 8 - The AftermathBy 3:00 AM, the estate was quiet again.

The guests had been safely evacuated through the rear motor court, their NDAs signed and sealed by my legal team. The police had carted away the physical evidence, the security logs, and the confession recording.

The narrow platinum band with the crooked little star carved inside.
The door opened softly. Mrs. Carter stepped in, holding little Rosie, who had finally fallen asleep, her thumb still in her mouth, her stuffed rabbit clutched tightly in her arm.

I stood up, walking around the desk, and gently placed the platinum ring into Martha’s weathered palm.

"This belongs to your family, Mrs. Carter," I said quietly. "And as long as I draw breath, your granddaughter's education, her home, and her future are secured by the Vance estate. No strings attached."
Martha looked down at the ring, a single tear cutting a clean path down her cheek. She didn't say thank you; words weren't enough. She simply nodded, turned, and carried the sleeping child back to the safety of the staff quarters.
