Chapter 1 - The BreachThe heavy oak doors of the Vance estate didn't just open—they splintered under a calculated, synchronized breach.

Before the echoes of the third knock could die down, heavily armed Federal Bureau of Investigation tactical agents flooded the grand ballroom. The pristine white-and-gold aesthetic, carefully curated for my baby shower, was instantly upended by tactical gear, heavy boots, and the cold, unyielding gleam of assault rifles.
"Nobody move! Federal agents! Hands where we can see them!"
The deep, commanding voice of Special Agent-in-Charge Marcus Vance (no relation, thankfully) sliced through the ambient panic like a razor.
Julian’s face drained of color, his arrogant smirk instantly morphing into a mask of pure confusion. He dropped his arm, stepping protectively—though entirely uselessly—in front of Chloe, who let out a shrill, ear-piercing shriek.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur Vance bellowed, his face turning the color of a bruised plum as he stepped forward, chest puffed out with the delusion of a billionaire who thought laws were suggestions meant for the poor. "Do you know who I am? I am Arthur Vance! My company built half the infrastructure in this state! I demand to speak to your superior—"
"Arthur Vance?" Agent Vance didn't even blink. He flipped open a laminated warrant, stepping past a terrified-looking caterer holding a tray of untouched champagne flutes. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"This is a mistake!" Beatrice shrieked, her diamonds rattling as she clutched her pearls. "Julian! Do something! Call our lawyers! Call the governor!"
Julian looked frantically between the armed agents and me. Still kneeling slightly against the ruined gift table, one hand cradling my bump, I slowly pushed myself up to a standing position. I didn't need help. My muscles, trained in the harshest black-ops boot camps before I transitioned to intelligence analysis, snapped back into high-performance gear the second adrenaline flooded my system.
"Julian," I said, my voice carrying an icy, level calm that cut through the chaos. "You asked me who I was."
Julian swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. "Clara... what... what is this? Did you call the cops? Are you insane?"
"Not the cops, Julian," I said, smoothing down the front of my elegant emerald maternity dress, which was now stained with white frosting. I walked past him, my heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor. "Federal authorities. Multi-jurisdictional financial crimes task force. Securities fraud, offshore money laundering, tax evasion, and illegal arms transit."
Chloe’s eyes widened in sheer terror. "He’s lying! She’s crazy! Arthur, do something!"
Arthur was currently being pushed against a Louis XIV console table, his expensive silk tie unceremoniously yanked down as cold steel handcuffs snapped around his aged wrists. "Get your hands off me, you fascist pig! My son-in-law—my son's wife—she's unhinged! This is a domestic dispute!"
"A domestic dispute involving fifty million dollars in embezzled pension funds and shell companies in the Cayman Islands?" Agent Marcus Vance raised a single eyebrow, walking over to me with a respectful nod. He didn't look at Arthur; he looked at me.
He pulled a small, secure military-grade encrypted drive from his tactical vest and held it out. "Package received, Captain. The decryption keys you sent matched the server architecture down to the digital signature. The raid was textbook."
The entire room went dead silent. Even the agents executing the sweep paused.
Julian stared at me, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and hollow. "Captain? What... what did he just call you?"
May you like
I took the drive from Marcus's hand, sliding it into the pocket of my coat. I turned back to face the man who, five minutes ago, had struck me to the floor in front of his family, his mistress, and our entire social circle.
"Major Clara Vance," I whispered, stepping close enough for him to smell the expensive perfume he had bought me for our anniversary—paid for, as it turned out, with stolen money. "Serial number 448-99-ALPHA. Formerly of the Joint Special Operations Command. I retired from active duty to give you a normal life, Julian. You mistook my peace for weakness."
