Chapter 2 - The House of Cards CollapsesThe descent of the Vance empire was not a slow, graceful decline; it was a supersonic freefall.

Within forty-eight hours of the raid, the financial markets opened to absolute devastation. Automated trading algorithms, triggered by the Department of Justice’s freeze on Vance Global assets, triggered a massive sell-off. Stock prices plummeted by 84% before the opening bell could even finish ringing.

I sat in the penthouse suite of the Four Seasons—having packed my bags and left the blood-stained, ruined mansion behind the very night of the shower—watching the live news broadcast on a 75-inch wall-mounted screen.

“...and in a shocking development,” the anchor reported, her voice breathlessly dramatic, “investigators have uncovered a complex web of offshore accounts tied directly to Arthur Vance and his son, Julian Vance. Sources close to the investigation state that the whistleblower was an internal operative who provided unassailable, military-grade financial forensics...”

A soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," I said without taking my eyes off the screen.

The door opened, and Marcus Vance stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder and two cups of hot chamomile tea. He set one down on the marble coffee table beside me, taking a seat on the opposite sofa.

"How are you holding up, Captain?" he asked, his tone shifting from professional operative to genuine concern. "The baby?"

I instinctively placed a hand over my stomach. The baby had been kicking vigorously ever since the adrenaline spike at the shower. It was a fighter, just like its mother.

"We're fine, Marcus. Better than fine. The medical checkup this morning confirmed zero complications from the fall. The kid's got a titanium skull already."

Marcus chuckled, though his eyes remained sharp. "Good. Because the vultures are circling. Julian’s legal team has tried to contact me three times this morning. They want a settlement, a gag order, anything to stop the leak of the secondary phase documents."

"Secondary phase?" I raised an eyebrow.

"The ones concerning Chloe’s family," Marcus grinned, opening the folder. "Turns out, Chloe’s father isn't just a minor real estate developer. He’s the front man for a syndicate in Eastern Europe that’s been using Vance Global to launder cartel money. The moment Arthur went down, Chloe’s family tried to liquidate her assets and book a private jet to Zurich."

"And?"

"And," Marcus slid a photograph across the table, "they were intercepted at Teterboro Airport an hour ago. Chloe is currently sitting in an interrogation room at federal holding, crying because her designer handbag got scuffed during the pat-down."

I looked at the photograph. It showed Chloe—hair messy, makeup smeared, wearing a cheap grey jumpsuit—being led away in handcuffs. The irony was poetic. She had wanted my life, my husband, and my status so badly that she had willingly tied herself to a sinking ship filled with anchors.

"What about Julian?" I asked quietly.

"Julian is currently experiencing a full psychological collapse," Marcus said flatly. "His mother posted bail for him using a secondary trust fund, but the DOJ froze that too within ten minutes. He’s broke. His cards are declined. His penthouse is under seizure. And his mistress has been unmasked as a federal flight risk."

Marcus leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "He wants to see you, Clara. He called my cell—somehow his lawyers got my number—begging for a meeting. He says he wants to 'talk things out like adults.'"

I picked up the chamomile tea, taking a slow, measured sip. The liquid was warm, soothing the remnants of the tension lingering in my shoulders.

"Tell him yes," I said.

Marcus blinked, surprised. "You want to meet him? Clara, you don't owe him a single second of your time. The law is handling him. Let the system chew him up."

"Oh, the system will chew him up, Marcus," I replied, a cold, predatory smile touching the corners of my lips. "Julian thinks this is a tragedy about money and betrayal. He still doesn't understand the cardinal rule of combat."

"Which is?"

"Never corner an apex predator," I said softly, looking down at my growing belly. "Especially when she's protecting her cub."
