Chapter 12 - The Ghost of the Past

The illusion of safety shattered before midnight.
A high-pitched, warbling shriek echoed through the mansion's ventilation system—not the sound of an intruder, but the automated alarm of the subterranean server room. It wasn't a physical breach this time; it was a ghost in the machine.
I bolted out of my quarters in the staff wing, my bare feet hitting the marble corridors in a dead sprint. By the time I reached the sub-level tech vault, Dante and three tactical guards were already stationed around the glowing monitors, their weapons drawn.
Dominic stood at the center console, his knuckles white as he stared at a terminal screen flashing a crimson warning: DECRYPTION IN PROGRESS. SOURCE: EXTERNAL OVERRIDE.
“They aren't just hacking our firewall,” Dante muttered, sweat beading on his forehead. “They’re routing a Trojan horse directly through the national security database. Somebody on the inside—someone with federal clearance—is giving them the digital backbone to bypass our biometric locks.”
I stepped closer to the glass partition, my eyes scanning the streaming lines of code. Years of listening to my father talk about firewall architecture and cryptographic keys came rushing back in a dizzying wave.
“It’s not a brute-force attack,” I said, my voice cutting through the hum of the servers.
Dominic turned sharply. “What did you say?”
“Look at the packet headers,” I pointed at a specific line of hex code flashing in amber. “They’re using an old RSA encryption key. It’s a legacy protocol. My father designed it back in 2018 for the DOJ’s internal asset-tracking system.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed. “An inheritance key.”
“Yes,” I whispered, a cold realization dawning on me. “They aren't trying to hack the system from the outside. They’re using a digital signature that matches my biometric metadata. They cloned my access token when my personnel file was updated in the federal registry last week.”
Before Dominic could respond, the main monitors flickered violently, cutting out the security feeds of the perimeter gates.

CLACK.
The heavy vault doors of the ground-floor service bay automatically unlocked with a mechanical groan.
