Chapter 2 - The Morning After the Collapse

The morning sun cast a cold, pale light across the snow-covered streets of Lincoln Park. Inside the mansion, the air smelled differently today—not of expensive potpourri and artificial lavender, but of fresh-brewed coffee and burning toast.
Richard stood over the stove, coughing slightly as a plume of smoke drifted from a charred waffle.
"Dad, it's smoking," Ethan whispered, giggling from his spot at the kitchen island. It was a sound Richard had rarely heard in all the years Cassandra lived here—his son actually laughing.
"It's just... character, buddy," Richard coughed, quickly scraping the black crust off with a spatula. "A little extra carbon never hurt anyone."
Before Ethan could bite into his imperfect breakfast, the heavy brass door-knocker echoed through the foyer.
Richard checked his watch. 7:00 AM sharp.
He walked briskly to the front door and pulled it open. Standing on the porch was a woman in her late forties with sharp, intelligent eyes, silver-streaked hair pulled back into a practical bun, and a demeanor that radiated absolute competence. Beside her stood a rolling suitcase.
"Mrs. Eleanor Vance?" Richard asked, recognizing her from the urgent file his executive assistant had hastily compiled at 3:00 AM.
"Mr. Blackwood," she said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation, her sharp gaze instantly sweeping the grand foyer, noting the missing designer shopping bags and the subtle shift in the atmosphere. "Your assistant told me you had an emergency. She didn't mention it was a rescue mission."
Richard felt a flush of shame, but he didn't look away. "Come in. I'll explain everything. But first... meet Ethan."
Eleanor walked into the kitchen. When she saw the eight-year-old boy sitting at the counter with flour on his nose and a plate of charred waffles, her stern expression instantly melted into something deeply compassionate. She didn't use the high-pitched, fake voice people usually reserved for children. Instead, she spoke to him like an equal.
"Good morning, Ethan. I'm Eleanor. I hear you're the man of the house."
Ethan looked up, cautious at first, then nodded. "Good morning. Do you like waffles? Even... even if they're a little black?"
Eleanor smiled warmly. "I love waffles with character. Mind if I sit down?"
Within ten minutes, Eleanor had taken over the kitchen with effortless grace, brewing a proper pot of tea, slicing fresh strawberries, and making scrambled eggs that actually looked edible. Richard watched in quiet amazement. This was what competence looked like—not tyranny, but care.
"I have to go to the office," Richard said, checking his watch again. The board meeting started in forty minutes. "Marcus is waiting. But Eleanor, if anyone calls—anyone at all, including Cassandra—they do not get access to Ethan. Understand?"
Eleanor paused, her eyes locking onto his with absolute steel. "Mr. Blackwood, while I am in this house, my only client is that boy. You handle your Wall Street games. I'll handle the home front."

Richard nodded, grabbed his briefcase, and walked out the door. He felt a heavy weight on his shoulders, but for the first time in years, the foundation beneath his feet didn't feel like sinking sand.
Little did he know, the storm outside was only beginning to gather.
