Chapter 2 - THE MONSTER IN THE SHADOWSThe rain lashed violently against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Arthur Vance’s study. The air inside the room was thick with the metallic smell of wet wool and terror.

Dr. Marcus Sterling stood motionless in the doorway, his silhouette illuminated by flashes of lightning. The black silencer on his 9mm pistol was pointed directly at Emily’s forehead.
"Put the journal and the drive back on the shelf, Emily," Sterling said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. "Slowly."
Emily held her breath, her fingers clutching the cold leather of the journal behind her back. Her mind raced, searching for any way out. "You're a doctor, Dr. Sterling. You took an oath! How could you do this? How could you help them bury him alive?"
Sterling let out a cold, humorless laugh. "An oath doesn't pay off twenty million dollars in offshore gambling debts, my dear. Julian and Victoria offered to wipe my slate clean. All I had to do was slip a paralyzed man into a coffin and sign a piece of paper."
"He trusted you for fifteen years!" Emily shouted, her voice trembling with rage.
"And he paid me handsomely for those fifteen years. But legacy dies, Emily, and money moves on," Sterling said, stepping into the room. The floorboards creaked under his weight. "Julian and Victoria were getting impatient. Arthur discovered they were stealing from the company’s offshore reserves six months ago. He was preparing to disinherit them completely and rewrite his will in your favor."
Emily’s heart hammered against her ribs. "So they decided to kill him."
"They needed it to look natural," Sterling explained, taking another slow step forward. "The tetrodotoxin was a masterpiece. It mimics sudden cardiac arrest perfectly. If you hadn't thrown your little hysterical fit at the crematorium, he would be ashes right now, and I would be on a private jet to Zurich."
"He’s alive, Sterling! He’s in ICU!"
"Not for long," Sterling sneered, raising the gun slightly higher. "Julian is at the hospital right now, filing an emergency injunction to disconnect life support. And as for you... a grieving, adopted teenager who broke into her father's estate and committed suicide out of sorrow? The media will weep for you."
He tightened his grip on the trigger.
Emily knew she had only seconds. Her eyes flicked to the heavy brass desk lamp sitting on the edge of the mahogany table beside her.
BOOM!
A deafening crack of thunder shook the entire estate, momentarily plunging the study into pitch-black darkness as the main power grid failed.
In that split second of total darkness, Emily didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy brass lamp and hurled it with all her strength toward the doorway where Sterling stood.
CLANG!
The lamp struck Sterling squarely in the chest. A muffled PTT-PTT rang out as two shots fired blindly into the dark, tearing through the leather armchair behind Emily.
Sterling grunted, stumbling backward. Emily sprinted through the darkness, using her knowledge of the house to dive past him into the hallway.
"Get back here, you little bitch!" Sterling roared, recovering his balance and firing another silent round that shattered a priceless vase on the hallway console.
Emily didn't look back. She flew down the grand staircase, her socks sliding on the polished marble. She burst through the kitchen doors, scrambled out the back servant’s entrance into the pouring rain, and hurled herself into the dense woods surrounding the property.
Behind her, she heard the heavy metallic slam of the back door opening.

"You can't run forever, Emily!" Sterling’s voice echoed through the dark, rain-soaked trees. "Julian owns the police! You have nowhere to go!"
Clutching the leather journal and the military-grade flash drive inside her soaked jacket, Emily kept running through the mud, her lungs burning, driven by one single thought: I have to reach the hospital before they turn off the machines.
