Chapter 1 - THE VEIL OF DECEPTIONThe heavy silence inside Callahan Auto Repair was violently shattered by the harsh, protesting squeal of tires locking up on gravel. A black luxury SUV slid to a sharp stop directly across the bay entrance, blocking the afternoon sun.

Walter Hayes stepped out of the vehicle. His custom-tailored suit looked entirely out of place amidst the oil-stained concrete and stacks of old tires, but his expression was far more dangerous than his attire. His face was twisted into a mask of pure fury, his eyes darting between Emily in her dust-covered wedding dress and me, still gripping the heavy iron wrench in my palm.
"Emily!" Walter bellowed, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "Have you completely lost your mind? Step away from him right now. You are playing games with people who will wipe this entire town off the map before sunrise."
I didn't step back. Instead, I shifted my weight, placing myself squarely between Walter and Emily. The iron wrench in my hand felt heavy and real, a grounding anchor in a world that had suddenly gone completely mad.
Emily didn't cower. She didn't look back at her father with the obedient submission she had worn for years. Instead, she reached up, her fingers trembling slightly as she clutched the fabric of her ruined dress, and pulled a small, heavy object from an inner pocket.

It was an encrypted military-grade hard drive.
"He isn't protecting me, Jack," Emily whispered, her voice cutting through her father's screaming. "He's protecting the ledger. Every dollar of that stadium project is blood money."
