Chapter 1 - THE NIGHTGOWN AND THE SCARSThe heavy silence of our wedding night hung in the dimly lit master suite of my Greenwich estate. Outside, the autumn wind rustled the ancient oaks, but inside, the world narrowed down to the woman standing before me.

Slowly, with trembling fingers, my new wife Emily lowered the thin lace strap of her white bridal nightgown.

I had prepared myself for anything. During our courtship, the staff whispers and my own lingering underworld instincts had told me to expect stretch marks, surgical scars, or physical proof of the three mysterious children everyone insisted she had concealed from her past.

Instead, my breath caught in my throat.

Thick, jagged, purple burn scars twisted violently from beneath her right collarbone, crossed her shoulder in grotesque ridges, and disappeared down her spine. The skin was tight, warped, and permanently disfigured by fire.

When I whispered her name, completely stunned, Emily looked at me through swimming tears and spoke the words that shattered our wedding night:

"Johnny, Paul, and Lily aren't who you think they are."

Before I could demand an explanation, she hurried across the room to the heavy leather suitcase she had brought from the servants’ wing and pulled out a yellowing, water-stained envelope.

Inside were three old photographs and a legal document worn soft and fuzzy along the folds. The first photograph showed two young boys and a little girl sitting on the wooden steps of a weather-beaten cabin. The second picture showed Emily herself, standing behind them with half her body wrapped in stark white hospital bandages.

She placed the papers into my hands, her voice breaking. "Once you understand the truth, Johnny... you might regret marrying me."
