Chapter 3 - THE WHISPERS IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM"Who gets all that money, Emily?" another senior housekeeper finally asked her one afternoon in the basement laundry room.

Emily paused, her hands freezing over the folding table. She hesitated before answering in a low voice, "Johnny, Paul, and Lily."

"Are they your kids?" another staff member pushed, crossing her arms with a judgmental smirk.

Emily didn't confirm or deny it. She only looked down and said, "They’re my responsibility."

By the end of the week, the rumor mill had poisoned the entire estate. The staff decided she had abandoned three children by three different men and fled her hometown to escape a ruined reputation. The story grew crueler with every repetition, branding her as irresponsible and deceitful.

Emily heard the whispers every time she walked past, but she never defended herself. In the servants' quarters, silence was always treated as proof of guilt.

I didn't know whether the rumors were true. But I knew the heavy, hollow ache in her eyes looked less like moral failure and more like profound, crushing exhaustion.
